When I was 17, my dad bought me a Remington 700 in .270. Since then I have killed a literal ton of deer, coyotes, a groundhog or three and I’m sure numerous other critters with it. It’s been rained on, snowed on, dropped, banged around and been a great gun. I’ve been thinking for a year or two about putting it in a better stock. And in the last couple years I was fortunate enough to be gifted a night vision capable riflescope. This rifle was the cheaper, blind magazine, load from the top version. I’d been looking at stocks lately and decided last week I wanted a removable magazine. I bought an aluminum bedded stock from Stocky’s Stocks. This thing fits fantastic. Bought bottom piece from midway USA and the magazine from them also. Put a new Picatinny scope base on the rifle as well. Waiting on my rings to get here so I can mount and zero the scope.

I’ll add a few more pics when I get the scope mounted

There’s something beautiful about giving an old rifle a new life. I’ve got an old Savage 110, from when they were all long actions, in .243 that I have every intention of tricking out but so far all I’ve done is put a nice piece of Boyd’s walnut on it that’s fitted to me.

This is the scope that’s going on it. Removable ocular with an infrared eye piece that takes its place. The illuminator isn’t the best, so I’ve got one of those coming also. I’m gonna have some coyote fun with this . Not my scope pictured but a pic of one I found on the interwebz. Mine was OD green when it came from GPD, I removed the paint and tried to make it look original. Close enough.

Need to get a white background for taking pics but this on is a little better

I am in the same boat. I have my first rifle that was given to me by my dad when I was a teenager. I have been thinking about building it with the same upgrades that you decided on. So far I can't bring myself to order the parts. Maybe its sentimental.

It's a Savage 10 that has had a rough life. Thickets and cut-overs were not kind to the aesthetics, chipped and scratched wood stock, and somehow I even bent the scope bell on it. Still shoots true.

I'm just glad someone else uses the kitchen table for gunsmith work as well :D

Cool project. BTW which stock is that, a McMillan or Bell and Carlson?

Nevermind I see that Stocky's makes their own LRC-sporter stock that looks like a freaking bargain. NICE!

That stock is badass, and comparable to a Bell and Carlson. Rugged and well made. For $199 with a removable and interchangeable comb I thought it was a good buy.
I don’t eat at my kitchen table. I work on guns there. And if I need a vise or need to drill, I’ll go out to my building. I had to drill the head off one of the takedown screws for that rifle last night before I got it apart

Looks awesome! Let us know how she shoots after the makeover.

Reviving this old thread. I haven’t even shot this from the rebuild until last weekend. @Studentofthegun and I shot and sighted in a couple rifles for gun season.

here’s my 100 yard target. The flier was the first and I wanted it a tad high at 100. Not bad

So,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you shot two rounds?

.

My brother bought a Remington Sportsman 78 from a friend of his who was in need of some money. The gun was a disaster. Couldn’t see through the foggy scope, had see through rings for the iron sights. Something was bent cause the scope pointed to the left of the bore. And the front sight blade was mounted off center to the right. I obviously couldn’t let him try and hunt with it in that condition. The sportsman 78 was a more economical version of the model 700. Can’t really tell a difference in it except for the bolt handle. The wood stock was beat up and ugly. @Belcher79 was gracious enough to give me a take off stock he had surplus to his needs. I had planned on doing a little work to it for my brothers Christmas present. So, along with the stock, I bought a new long action scope base, 30mm rings, and a Vortex Strike Eagle scope. Got it mounted this week and was able to shoot it yesterday. I’ll get some better pics soon, but wanted to show it off a little

Not bad for 100 yards off a bipod.

First shot was low and to the right a tad. Second group was 4 which was high. Third group was just a tad high but that’s ok. There’s three in the final group.

That’s sharp! Nothing better than brothers!!

Nice, I had a rem 700 in 270 just like that before it got a makeover.

Can’t ask for anything better than that! Great shooting and even greater brother! He’s gonna love that rifle, not because it looks and shoots good, but because you took the time to bring her to life and did it all for him.
