Ok guys I'm wanting to try again this year for a deer or 2 to fill my freezer. Where I will be hunting I will have a max shot of 50 to 70yds no more. Will have 2 shooting lanes. I'm wanting to build a small deer stand/hide. Just for one person. Will 4x4ft be big enough for the floor? What should I do for the height? I think the minimum in SC is 10 feet off the ground.

There is a large gumball tree right behind where I plan on building it. Should i try to build off the tree?

Or will i be better off with just buying a ladder stand??

Buy a ladder stand. And a decent fall arrest system.

This, just buy a ladder stand. You can get them for next to nothing. Get help putting it up, and wear a fall harness. You’ll be happy you did when you decide to move it and it doesn’t weigh 500lbs

I would just get a single ladder stand. All of the double ladder stands that I have used have a bar across the back that makes it very uncomfortable.

Get a single and some screw in steps to hang a pack from. I sometimes use a bow holder to hang my rifle too.

If you don’t have help to put one up get a lock on and sticks. Much easier to put up solo.

a ladder stand you are exsposed to the weather
a box stand you can stay dry and warm, more freedom to move around, snack, answer mother nature, etc

I think one of these will be perfect for me. For the place it will be placed. They also make a camo enclosure kit for it. Any issues I should need to be worried about?
Those are good if you gun hunt at longer ranges.
The deer will peg you at closer ones.

The older I get the more I like ladder stands. The bigger ones are harder to hang by yourself. The small flimsy ones aren’t very comfortable so there is a trade off. When I had good knees my favorite stands where the Gorilla hang-on with sticks.
20 foot of sticks and a hang-on stand was what worked good for me.
I have an Olé Man climber, that is great when you can’t have a permanent stand or want to be mobile in your placement.

Height is your friend.

Here is one I like but you may not need the extra room. These are made by an excellent company so any of their stands will work.

We have a two man on the lease like this, very comfortable and relaxing to sit in for a few hours. As our large wood box stands rot, they get replaced by the metal ladder stands, not near as much room and harder to build a top/sides for.

For the OP, we have the 10' rule in my county also but it only applies when using centerfire's. At 50 or 75 yards a .22 mag or .17HMR from a ground blind would work if you want to take a head shot.
