A good friend has been working on his family’s HD setup. We were talking today and he asked why I had multiples of certain firearms instead of having a nice variety. I tried to explain that having the same type of HD firearms (a few of the same ARs and a few of the same handguns) means common operation, common ammo, common magazines and common parts. I also explained I do have other firearms but for HD the handgun and long gun are my two gotos. I tried to share the “two is one & one is none” concept but he can’t quite get by my idea of it. My basic premise is in my house everyone (my wife, son and myself) will have a like handgun and a like long gun (even down to same type optics and BUIS) and there is one backup for each just in case. I know it sounds a little weird and non-gun people likely would see it as an “arsenal” with all the ammo, mags and spare parts. Am I paranoid/crazy or do any of you guys go with the “two is one & one is none” type thinking?

I don't think its paranoid, or crazy. I don't have two of the exact same pistol, but I have multiples of styles that are comparable...i.e. Glock 19/CZ P07, different ARs set up different ways, ect. Having a primary and a back up is a good idea. So if its a good idea for you, why isn't it a good idea for anyone else in your family that may need to defend themselves.

Ask him if he buys his toilet paper one roll at a time. After all, all Toilet Paper is basically the same, so why not just use up a roll and then go to the store and buy another single roll? What...because maybe the roll will run out when you need a little more paper? Say it aint so!

DAMN STRAIGHT SKIPPY!

It is an unwritten rule ... when you replace the roll of TP from under the counter you better replace that roll with one from the linen closet.

And to that end I am trying to get same caliber setups, ie FN FiveseveN and PS-90, etc...1911 and Thompson...

Personally if the controls operate the same, they take the same mags, with the same ammo that's good enough, as long as the sights aren't gimmicky.

Identical is not necessary.

If I try on a shirt I like, I buy three. If I find a handgun I like for HD, I buy 4! [emoji857]

When you find things that work you stock up on them..

LCP got 4
G19 got 2
J frames got several

I have 8 pair of eye glasses with the exact same frame. If they stop making that frame I have enough to get me to my end.

Sounds totally normal to me. That’s why I have mostly M&P9’s and AR’s.

Same.

I put a high value on consistency, compatibilty, and simplicity.

Now if only AR's and AR pistols that used M&P9 magazines were more common...

I don't so much have the same firearms. But most handguns are 9mm or 38/357. And have the same basic controls. Common calibers and functions just make things simple.
