It was pretty safe at the one in Cherryville today...I counted four people other than me that were carrying.

They were targeted, followed in the store. But were they followed prior to entering?
Unless they were flashing expensive clothing or jewelry then it is not implausible that it was gang/drug related.
When we lived in Lowell, people knew not to wear anything that could be construed as gang colors at large public gatherings due to the level of gang violence in the small city.

Something doesn't add up...ā¦.. they were after this couple bad enough to exchange gunfire. Your typical purse snatcher, car jacker, etc would have probably just ran away. They were after this couple for a bigger reason.

Armed criminals don't take kindly to people defending themselves and preventing them from getting "their money and car" from the intended target.

While it is certainly possible, there are some for sure things that happened real quick after this incident: the couples names were ran, their firearm serial numbers were ran, they were searched, their car was searched.
The story has been updated about 24 hours after the original and there are several newsworthy items not mentioned:
"Xxx grams of (insert illegal drug) and $$$ cash confiscated after shootout"
"Couple arrested for posession of firearms by felons following shootout"
"Couple arrested for posession of firearms with altered serial numbers following shootout"
"Couple arrested for posession of stolen firearms following shootout"
"Couple charged with carrying concealed handguns without a license following shootout"
"Police still seeking couple who fled scene following shootout"
"Couple arrested on outstanding warrants following shootout"
This couple stuck around after the incident to talk to the cops knowing what kind of scrutiny they would be under.
In the absence of further info, I'm inclined to believe they are indeed innocent.

And from the looks of things have a lot of car "shoots" too.
They are about the only stores left these days.
