I finally got a chance to load some heavy and slow 9mm, a 147gr blue bullet over some W231 for about 925fps (as chronoed with a G34). Out of a G19 with a Rugged Obsidian 45 in short config, this load was significantly quieter than the factory 147gr lawman I had been shooting. Not so with the Extar using the same can, it was not hearing safe in my opinion. Do you guys think this is solely attributable to the unlocked blowback system and noise coming from the ejection port?

Delayed blowback is the best solution but all the delayed blowback carbines are fairly expensive. I don't know of any available for less than a grand, most more.

A short term low cost thing you might want to try is a brass catcher. They can muffle the ejection port noise a little.

Pheww yea all of the delayed guns are super expensive. The Extar was an experiment to see if I even liked semi auto PCCs and the jury is still out.

I’ve had a suppressed lever or bolt PCC floating around in my head for awhile that might be the way to go.

Yes. Your g19 is locked breech, quieter than blowback.

This was the best delayed roller deal for a while

The CMMG Banshee has a delayed blowback system. It's not cheap, but cheaper than most. They are comparable with most AR parts, and I was impressed.

And........titegroup or wsf with 147 grain bullets are my go to for a suppressed round.

Im waiting on some xtreme 165 gr .355 bullets for this purpose. some say the extra heavy projectile is quieter and others say theyre not…so I’m finally going to see for myself. Planning to load with xtreme data using some tiny charge of titegroup like 2.6 gr or somewhere in that neighborhood.

@Fred not seeing any provision for a device attachment or threading. The crown also looks very exposed…not digging what I see in the photos for that P model.

Yeah, i've been watching those mp5 clone prices fall. Last summer i saw a guy get one at 1300 at a pawn/gun shop and it seemed like a steal.
now, 1k is not even a great sale price. just the versions that everybody wants cost a little more.

The only thing I don't like about the mp5 style guns is the difficulty (expense really) of adding an optic. The last decade hasn't helped my vision at all so I'm looking at glass. I bought a low ish end claw mount and it's worthless. I need to figure something out. I know that something won't be cheap. Oh well.

If it was 100% practical question I'd look real hard at the Banshee or the Scorpion or the Stribog. It's likely that this is not a purely practical question. It's likely this is at least in part a range toy and in part a vanity acquisition. Nothing wrong with that at all. I know I never use mine to repel terrorists from Nakatomi Plaza. If the mp5 is the itch you have, get the mp5.

I have good luck with the mount that came with my Zenith(MKE). I threw on a C-more slide ride on it. Gets the dot about the front sight tower

I have a PTR clone, it has an integrated pic rail on top.

I have a fairly tricked out scorpion that I’m too invested in to ever sell.

I would like to fondle and run a Stribog one day. Banchee is on the list.

For some reason I’d like an MP5 for the fun factor but it’s one firearm I’m ok not owning at the moment. If it was original and had a fun switch, that’s a totally different conversation.

I recently shot the Stribog SP9A3 (roller delayed). Have been shooting an AR9 direct blowback for several years. I am a fan of the roller delayed. Impulse is softest 9mm I’ve ever shot. Would like to try he roller delayed suppressed to see how much difference there is.

A little digression on PCCs.

It sucks that most of them are over weight and over priced and mostly the felt recoil is disproportionate. Most are blowback which is why they are heavy bricks and why they recoil so much. Seriously, an AR in 9mm has more felt recoil than one in 5.56 and that's nuts. Most of the semi auto look alikes of classic submachine guns are pretty coarse. A semi MAC is rough. The Uzi transitioned well enough to semi but it's a 12lb gun. Likewise the Thompson. A lot to carry. Fun at the range but a lousy woods walker. I do like the MP5 in part because it's light. That's the big advantage of the roller delay. A nice, light, easy to shoot little carbine. But the price is out of line. Why that 60+ year old design costs twice what an AR costs is beyond me. I know there are more ARs made but the demand for the HK pattern rifles has always been there. They could have been churning them out for decades.

Anyways, rant over. I think the Hi Point is priced right about where most 9mm carbine ought to be. I wish it had a delayed blowback. Maybe the Kiralay system or a tilting bolt like the SKS or Reising. A delay would let them make the bolt lighter. The gun is, if I remember correctly, pretty light. A great "bang for the buck." Flip side is, it's no one's dream gun. Lots of us have had an Uzi, a Tommy or an MP5 as a bucket list gun. Dreaming of them even. I doubt there are many guys laying in bed thinking of the Hi Point they are saving up for.
