I’m having issues with my 10/22 locking back every 2-5 shots, with rounds still in the magazine. I modified the bolt lock like a VQ auto version so I can just release with the charging hande but the problem persists.

Ive tried with 6 different mags (10 and 25 rounds) and it happens with all of them.

Can I remove the bolt lock completely?

Can I widen the bolt lock opening even more?

I don’t care if I lose the ability for last round bolt hold open. At this point the rifle is just a paperweight if I don’t get it resolved.

Thanks!
You modified so that you release the bolt, after you've locked it back with the lever, by just pulling back on the bolt handle? If so, it doesn't give you last round hold open, which stock 10/22 doesn't possess.
Or have you've done other modifications to achieve "last round bolt hold open?" All modifications I've seen for this require modifying magazines in addition to the trigger group.
Link to VQ modification you did?

Did it work before you mod'd the release plate?

I'd take out the mod'd release plate and swap it with an OEM or take it out temporarily (I believe you can leave it out and shim with a washer to replace the lost plate in the mag release) to see if you're still having the issues with the mags. My guess is that the plate needs some more tweaking or have accidently removed too much from the hole in the plate.

Did you have any pics of the failed conndition? Do you have any clue on what it's getting held open by?

The bolt catch/release can be a PIA even when working correctly. I suspect you've removed too much material from the part or its' spring is not installed correctly.

Make sure there are no rough edges anywhere on the bolt lock plate. Even. Very small burr can case the problem you are having.

Check your ejector. I had a similar malfunction once and this is what I found.

To me it sounds like there is something wrong in the trigger group. Maybe a spring is out of place putting tension somewhere that it’s not supposed to.
