Department of Defense Chooses Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo

Is it gonna use an ELD boolit?

Maybe it’s a joke from another thread that I’ve missed but what’s with the 14.5” thing? I thought 20-24” was ideal for 6.5CM and I see that article says they'll use 20” barrels.

Interesting. I'd like to know what they were thinking in making this selection.

14.5" mid gas is in service now. With the Vortex 1-10x. no one wants a 20" stick. but its a start

Same range as a 22 inch 308 in a 14.5 inch gun.. this according to the video. That is pretty sweet. Maybe more sweet for you guys who do not have to buy their own ammo.

Thats BS.

What that dude is not saying is the DOPE chart for a 14.5" 6.5 Creed is the same DOPE chart for a SASS-110 +/- .1 mil

Thats where the simplicity comes in.

With the new reticle the US Army just came out with, oh its on.

From your article...

"A specialized group from the U.S. Department of Defense will purchase an undisclosed amount of ammunition in 6.5 Creedmoor from Hornady for its long-range sniper platform."

Not to nit pic but... 14.5 is not a long range sniper platform.

Sure.
1000yds is not long range? How about 700yds? or 800yds?

700 and 800 yards are long range. yes 100% I would venture to say with a 16 inch 5.56 most people couldn't hit at that distance with any degree of accuracy and repeatability. I think you are saying 6.5 Creedmore in a 14.5 is going to be used MUCH more widely than just for a long range sniper as the Hornady article quotes. Like replace the M4 ?

Sales guy selling stuff i think. You gotta talk up the Product when it comes at KAC prices.

800yds 16" 5.56mm is not hard, it just takes time to learn wind reading.

14.5" 6.5 Creedmoore is the same level of difficulty of a 18" .308win at the same distances. medium precision rifle skill set.

Well 14.5 6.5 creedmoor information is pretty hard to come by. Everything i read was from much longer barrels. It sounds like we need some data. I think you need to get one and start shooting it and post the data here. After listening and doing some digging here is my take. Knights wants to sell these guns as a carry rifle, not a DMR. This is a marketing push. KAC wants to have this uber sexy rifle to offer Tier 1 guys something with more killing power and range in the smaller package they like. I dunno if the door kickers want a 14.5 with an LPVO on it but if they do... this would be pretty sweet. I would be real tempted if the AMMO WASN'T SO DAMN EXPENSIVE!

Not a guy who's well read on 6.5 (.308 dinosaur) but I believe I've read 6.5 eats barrels up fast. Maybe folks with DOD budgets don't care, but it still seems like 6.5 only gets 25% the barrel life as compared to 7.62x51. If they're selling this on accuracy advantage seems like the advantage is fleeting once the guns get deployed into a hot zone.

This rifle "SR25 14.5" mid gas" is new to the public "shot 2020". Its been in circulation since 2018 in the US Army. Data is a simple numbers game. for the programs to kick out and give one something to play with. Take any 22" 6.5Creed data and subtract 600fps from it and BAMB! you got DOPE yo.

This makes it sound more like a small group is going to use it for specialized purposes...not that the entire .mil is moving platforms.

It's the Tier one guys. They get all the toys. Joe Bob in the 82nd isn't getting a 14.5 inch 6.5 from Knights.

No Army units have used the Mk13 for at least 5 yrs. Navy and Marines use the Mk13. The .300 WM in the Army sniper locker is the similar M2010. As stated the 6.5 Creed is to be put into a Mk11/M110 20" semi sniper rifle. I haven't seen any 14.5" Creed rifles here in Afghanistan and I've been here over two years with SOF.

Interesting.

CD - what do the people in SOF use now for their duty rifle?

Rangers use a combination of 10.3" and 14.5" with DD RIS II forearms and Surefire 4P flash hinder/suppressor. Known as either a Block II or URG.
Special Forces use 10.3" above or new Gessiele URGI 14.5" upper. Same SF RC Suppressor
MARSOC- same URG but older KAC NT4 suppressor/flash hinder
SEALs-Same as Rangers but known as Mk18 Mod 1
AFSOC same URG as rest of SOCOM
All use the same M4A1 select fire lower, uppers all 5.56mm

There are also FN SCAR Mk16/Mk17s also. Rangers use the Mk16 in 5.56 and SF the Mk17 in 7.62mm. The Mk17 MAY just get a new barrel for 6.5mm Creed as that is all that is needed. Same bolt/magazines.
