Police: Woman bicyclist guns down armed man in downtown Detroit

Detroit — A 24-year-old man is dead after a late-Tuesday night "road rage" confrontation in downtown Detroit became violent, police said.

The fatal shooting took place about 10:50 p.m. on the 400 block of East Jefferson, police said in preliminary information.

That's the same block as the Renaissance Center, between Randolph to the west and Beaubien to the east. The shooting happened on the eastbound side of the street, nearest the RenCen.

Janae Gordon, a spokeswoman for Detroit Police Department, said the man was driving a 2006 Land Rover when he had a "road rage" incident with the two bicyclists.

He then allegedly exited the Land Rover, with a weapon in hand, and approached the pair.
The weapon was not a gun, Gordon said, but police declined to specify what it was, citing the ongoing investigation.

One of the bicyclists, a 28-year-old woman and a concealed pistol license holder, was armed, and allegedly fired once, striking the man. He died from his injuries.

Police took the gun into evidence but have not made an arrest.

For those not familiar with the area, this is the block and side of the street the story is talking about.

In some small way, I feel like I have contributed to this death, having helped thousands many detroit women learn to shoot and normalize gun carrying up there. And I'm fine with that. No man worth his salt jumps out of a fricking battle wagon with a weapon in hand to attack a woman on a bicycle. That area is ALWAYS congested, and everybody knows it. you deal with it. (spin around on the street view link to see what i'm talking about)
One shot stopped the attacker with no harm to anybody else. Cops shouldn't have taken her gun, they should have given her ammo and asked her to teach them how to shoot.

One of many reasons I will never road bike. Good for her, hopefully the investigation comes out well and she did everything right.

From that link:

"The cyclist's girlfriend, who was an armed, Concealed Pistol License holder, fired a single shot killing the man. Detroit police placed her under arrest."

She may have been released later?
She may have been detained and the reporter didn't know the difference. An arrest is when someone is getting charged.

Detroit police sources say the man was in an SUV and was upset with the cyclists riding on Jefferson.

He shouted at them and one of the cyclists shouted back, prompting the man to get out of the SUV and confront the vocal cyclist with a knife.

"Realistically she has a right to protect herself but under Michigan law, she has the right to protect others as well," said Johnson. "Just the fact that the other person had a knife and she had a gun doesn't matter. Just the mere fact her boyfriend was in imminent fear of death, great bodily harm at that particular time, she had the right to use lethal force."

So, the boyfriend had a mouth, but the girl had to do the dirty work.

Them are some sound legal facts you have thrown out as proof. But the media whore said arrested you got another link to a blog that says otherwise. #bloglife

I don't think "disparity of force" should be in this equation.

IMO, anybody who "comes after" someone with the apparent intention of doing them harm (as in aggressively wielding "a weapon") should calculate and assume the risk that they might meet return force that might make them dead.
And I don't know if disparity applies since it was 1 on 2 and one was a male.

I thought gender can't be assigned or assumed anymore. Shouldn't make a difference now that everyone's supposed to behave as if they're satisfactorily woke.
Well, look who used words and who used a gun. Who talked about it and who took care of business? ;)

Good for her. I've had stuff thrown at me. Cars intentionally try to force me off the road and had a guy stop and get out with a pistol once. All because I was just riding down the road on a bicycle. Some people have serious anger issues. At least this woman cured this guys issues.

I have to question the wisdom of bicycling at 11:00 PM in Detroit???

There used to have huge group rides through Atlanta at night. Large groups of cyclists hauling ass through the streets at night. There is a segment of cyclists that are not only not too bright, but just down right deranged.

Would have loved to have seen the look on the guys face going to teach them cyclists a lesson and seeing a gun pointed at him a split second before he was shot. HaHa!
“Gee, I could have easily drove around them since there is no traffic and let them be but Nooo, I had to be a man and yell at them for not paying taxes or something else stupid”

Well, you certainly wouldn't want to do that during the day! Ever driven in Atlanta?
:D

and this is why im always carrying when im riding my road bike....something about cyclists that bring out the idiot in certain folks
How do you carry? I've been looking for a chest rig or something similar for a G42.

What is all this sht about disparity of force. If someone is coming at me and it's obvious they want to harm me, there is no disparity calculation, I'm simply not going to be harmed in any way.

It's like people think you should get beat up a little according to the law. No I prefer not getting beat up at all. Don't do, don't try and beat people up and you won't get dead.

Same happens in detroit, except the "Slow Roll" is usually monday nights. But there are plenty of people who ride every night
That area is 1-2 blocks from the heart of down town, where all the festivals happen, where they host free movies on summer nights, etc. It's also right by all the Quicken buildings, all the restaurants, the river walk, etc.

I leave my lcp in the same holster that i pocket carry in and slide it in the middle back pocket on my jersey. every altercation i have been in on my bike normally involves someone driving by either yelling or throwing something mostly cowards who would never stop and be involved in an altercation anyway

Honestly my gun is mainly for dogs that i cant outrun and dont get dissuaded by a water bottle being sprayed to the face. i might need to reconsider and go to something a little quicker but im sure i will give up some comfort

Wish I could "like" this a dozen times. The issue is one of capability of (doing) harm, not disparity of force.
