So my cordless drill, 18V Dewalt, has finally gotten to where the batteries will not hold a charge. It has been a great one; I have had it probably 10 years and the batteries have held up well.

Went on-line to order replacements and on Amazon - Dewalt 18V, 2 each in a pack, are $99.
However, I can also order a new Dewalt cordless 18V drill, 2 batteries, charger, and a canvas carrying bag for $99.

Ordered the complete kit. Am I missing something here? Where do you get your replacement batteries?

Are they the 9096 model?

We replace the whole kit as well. B&D wants to sell drills, not batteries, I guess.

Went to replace my 18v battery for my drill and all the new stuff was 20v now. Now batteries to be found in 18v variety.

You can buy decent cells on amazon or ebay and replace the internal cells yourself fairly easily. Youtube is your friend. The size you need is called "sub-c" and each pack requires 15 cells each. Last time I rebuilt a pack I got enough cells for 2 packs for less than the cost of one new dewalt battery pack.

As a perk, the service counter at HD or Lowes often has a battery recycling box for old rechargeables, I've found several dead battery packs in those, rebuilt them and doubled my battery inventory.

If you decide to rebuild your own, take off your wedding band before you start.

Butter - my old batteries are DC9099; the new batteries with the kit are DC9098
Gotcha, they're the old black ones. Sorry, cant help you with those

We (BellSouth at the time) used to use a local guy here in Charlotte that would replace the cells for pennies on the dollar.

Lots of people don't really realize how large of a fleet of vehicles BellSouth/AT&T has. Up until a couple years ago it was the largest fleet in the US. We sold off enough during downsizing that we got passed by UPS. Yep...think about that based on how many brown trucks you see on the road.

And every one of the trucks we had on the road had multiple rechargeable batteries in it. It was also our most stolen item. Somebody would cut through a fence, bust out truck/van windows, and steal $99 drills...while leaving $50,000 test sets on the truck. All about resale value.

That being said...replacing the cells is definitely an option.

We've had good results using Batteries+ to re-cell our gear at work.

I have a lot of 18v tools ,so I bought a tool with the 20v batteries and a 18v to 20v adapter(online). Later Lowe's had the 2x20v batteries, adapter and charger on sale for $99 . So now I'm set for a while.

The kit you mention likely has the most basic drill. Don't know that you need it, but you're not gonna get their mac-daddy top shelf hammer drill for $99. I use my hammer drill everyday, one of the basic ones wouldn't last me a month.
Two of the old post style batts for $99 is as good as the price gets for new ones. But they are NiCad batteries and the newer slide-on style are Li-on type, which run longer, lighter in weight, and last longer.
For a brief time, they made post style batteries in Li-on. I have a couple of those that are 4-5 years old and they still work like day one.
@ES44AC mentioned an adapter. It allows the newer Li-on batteries to be fitted to the older post style tools. Pretty cool. The Li-on batts kill the old NiCad stuff.

We had one of the Bosch drills where the commercial said you could drop it two stories onto cement and still run it...I dropped it one floor onto wood and destroyed it. I've ran my 18v dewalt hammer drill until I couldn't touch anything but the grip because it was so hot and I still use it. I'm not kidding, it was so hot it would blister you.

We also had a craftsman 19.2v kit with angle drill and regular drill. It cost $99 and would do anything a dewalt would do minus the hammer. Maybe the best battery drill set we ever owned.

Often the kits will have a 1AH battery, possibly the twin pack you saw online was for 3 or 4AH batteries.

Working at Home Depot, I bought into Ryobi for my home needs.
They have drill kits with 2 batteries (18v) for 99 bucks.
But they also have 2 battery sets for the same price but they are the much larger 4AH battery, not the 1AH that the kit comes with.

Seen the same thing with other brands the company sells.

I stopped buying dewalt because of this reason. I buy Bosch now.. I don't have battery problems even after 4-5 years.

I take mine to Battery king and they have them rewound.

Ballpark cost?
Higher for the snap on than others. They told me over the phone anywhere from $15 to $35 dollars but they needed to see the battery to be sure they could do this particular one. $64 is what it actually cost me. I found a place on the west coast that would do this one for $41 but I would have had to ship it there and back so I bit the bullet and went ahead and let Batteries plus do it.

Thanks. I texted my FIL who works at Interstate, and he says they do them for $49.99.

I have a Makita 18v Li-ion battery that's gone bad. After looking at some YouTube videos....I don't think it really worth trying to fix. They have a computer board you have to replace ($12 on fleabay) then have to get the cells. Pain in the butt too
Sucks!

This is why I like Ridgid. Lifetime warranty including the batteries. It's made by TTI, same guys who make Milwaukee, Ryobi, echo and more.

I recently got my little sister a brushless 20v Dewalt drill (non-hammer) with 2 batteries for $99 at lowes on clearance. It was easily the best deal around, not listed online though.

If you only use the batteries for your cordless drill,, toss it and buy something newer with lithium.

I bought a 20v porter cable drill/impact driver combo from lowes on Black Friday a couple years ago for $99. Best money I've ever spent. All my old DeWalt batteries sucked so I tossed them. But I have a hammer drill and sawzall one of you needs that already has batteries

It my line of work the guy put cordless tools to the test.

Porter Cable puts out quality tools but obviously I don't have to tell you.

They do! I use them a couple times a week. Just this morning I drilled holes in a friends truck bed line who had just bought a tool box. She wouldn't do it herself. I'm glad to drill holes in someone else's stuff

Lowes had a deal today that for $199 you got a 20 volt Dewalt drill, impact gun, charger, 2 batteries and a 3rd tool of your choice. Thats a smokin deal.

You can buy 15 tabbed sub C Ni-Cd cells on amazon for under $32,
remember NEVER solder directly to the batteries, you will damage
the plastic insulation inside and ruin the cell(s). Always use the welded tabs.
