For years I have been shooting a piston driven AR and a little over a year ago I got a couple DI driven guns. I have cleaned everything expect the gas tube. What is the best way to clean the tube? I have heard about using a pipe cleaner. Also, How often does the tube need cleaning?

The fear of how dirty di guns get is greatly overrated imo. Don’t worry about the gas tube. Go shoot some m193.

Never cleaned one.
My 16" carbine has North of 12k through it, from various commercial 5.56 to super light gamer loads, still as overgassed as ever.
They do/did market a long pipe cleaner as a gas tube cleaner.

You can get 12"-14" pipe cleaners from a local cigar/pipe shop for a few bucks, I have some and I'll run one through my gas tube every now and then but its one of those things that "cant hurt" but isn't really something you "need" to do.

After decades of being issued M16s/M4s since the early 80s and having my own guns have NEVER cleaned the gas tube internally. It cleans itself. You can use a pipe cleaner to clean around the gas tube at the receiver opening or inside the bolt carrier key.

This should pretty much end the thread.

I recently cleaned mine, as I was switching gas blocks and had long pipe cleaners, so figured I'd run one down the tube.

Didn't expect much and didn't find much.

I asked Wahoo about it years ago when I first bought an AR and he basically said that every time you pull the trigger a jet of super heated gas blasts through the tube which basically cleans itself. Years later, I’ve never heard of anyone anywhere at any time having a failure due to a clogged gas tube.

The only failure I’ve heard of was during a torture test using steel commie ammo.
