Did You Go Shooting Today

@200 rounds on the outside steel range. Shot the Dan Wesson again and the CZ RAMI. Not too bad today at 15 yards. Tinman shot with me and shot a number of guns. Had problems with every gun due to some horrible Walmart Winchester cheap ammo. That ammo is a turd. Very dirty as well.

Definately done with that ammo. It was cheap so not sure what I should expect. I'm guessing reliability is to much to expect

Spent few hours at Frontline Defense, hit the steel with my Omega suppressor and M&P 15x, ARX100,
finally fired my Mini 14 and Garand then adjusted the Magpul sights on my Glock 22 SBR Micro Roni.
Ran into Ladder13, Ziggy and Paul. I had the 500 range all to myself, nobody knows how bad I shoot.:)
Glock 22 with 9mm Lone Wolf Alpha barrel SBR with the MicroRoni and my Tavor with the Omega.

Went to Frontline this morning. Shot my Garand with the first loads I worked up for it. Now I can start production rounds for it. Need to collect some more 30-06 brass.

Shot the 44mag carbine and verified the scope @ 50 yards. Very happy with this gun and load. 240gn Zero bullets, 300-MP powder, 1800fps.

Shot the same loads in the 44 Blackhawk. I had take the scope off to work on it and had to reset the zero. Got it back where it should be.

While I was still at the 50 yard rifle lane, I emptied about 50 rounds of 45acp from my S&W 625. I had some left-over 185gn plated FN bullets and wanted to use them up. Minute of man @ 50 yards, nothing to brag about, but was fun nonetheless.

Hit up Foothills this morning with a friend, grouping circled in blk I did. This was the 1st time ever shooting at these distances.
Lower R/L @ 100 yds
Upper R/L @ 150 yds
Middle @ 200 yds

Must have just missed you. I was there from around 11-1pm, shooting my AR. Had the range to myself for the first hr, then had some nice guys shooting a 300 WinMag join me for about an hour.

I took the cowboy guns out today. Shot some Aguila Colibris and CCI .22 short CB from the SA revolver. The Colibris were fun to shoot. PewPew!
Then I put 100 rounds of CCI SV through my Henry Small Game Rifle. I was having problems with the Skinner peep sight. The octagonal barrel is very shiny and there was a ton of glare due to the lighting. I still managed some respectable (for me) shooting. A good day overall! I haven't been out in about a month.

I have some of the Aguila Colibris but have yet to shoot any. I need to test those.

Is the tunnel you are shooting through for noise abatement?

I've been wondering about something like that for a private range. Do you also notice reduced noise from the shooters perspective?
Yes, I noticed that when we got to the pistol range it was much louder. Here's a close up of the inside of the box.

Went out and worked with my XDs. Shot 167 rounds through it today. I was shooting solidly in the bullseye and 9 ring out to 12 yards until I got cocky and started rapid fire.:p I stayed in the 5-12 yard range today with the 9mm.

I shot 50 rounds with my .380 Pico at 3 and 5 yds. One handed, two handed and left handed, still not satisfied but managed to keep the shots grouped in the 8 and 9 rings and a few bullseyes, more or less rapid fire, because I figure if I have to take out the Pico, it will probably be a mag dump scenario at close range. The trigger is seriously heavy and still getting broke in. It's not a fun range gun, but I like the challenge. I don't use the extended mag.

Put 600 rounds through some new (to me) Glock 19s. Also put about 140 rounds through one of my el cheapo ARs. Probably the last time I'll shoot for a while since I'm expecting a child next week. Luckily I'll still be dryfiring every day while on the exercise bike. :D

The cake eaters easily converted to pie eaters today. Oh and of course copious amounts of ice cream. Then, between selling guns and trucks we actually shot some. All around a blessed day with my pals. The range looks great, the targets are standing up well. All is right in the world. I retire to rest for dealing with toothless Yankees tomorrow. To all a good night!

I had a great shooting weekend. Saturday I finished welding repair on three “scrap steel plate racks” that were recently acquired by me after being surplused by a local range. They are all working well again. Next up is painting (and I’m kicking around ideas for some type of 12VDC method for automatically resetting them)

Then Saturday afternoon I had a couple over to go shooting in celebrations of a birthday. .22 and .9mm pistols. 223 AR, 1928A1 Thompson and an MP5SD all put a lot of rounds down range.

Then Sunday a good friend and great SMG shooter / instructor / RO stopped by with his family for several hours of training. His nephew is a LEO from NJ and was the beneficiary of several hours of tactical training with a suppressed Uzi. I took the opportunity to sight in a PPQ Q5 with a Shield RMS (I replaced the Deltapoint Pro that was on it with the RMS for a faster sight acquisition).

About 1200 rounds poorer, but all in all a great weekend shooting!

Mrs Toprudder and I went to TSA tonight, first time she has been to the range in about a month. Last time, I let her shoot my S&W 22A, which she really liked, so this time I took my Ruger SR22 to let her try that. 100 rounds downrange, no hiccups. She also shot a few rounds of 45 through her CZ. I took my S&W 625 45acp revolver. Out of 90 rounds, I had two light-strikes, both fired on a second strike. This is the only time I have had a problem, and these were from the same batch, so I may have had some primers that were not fully seated. I normally use small primer brass, but these were large primers, all Winchester.

Spent three hours at Frontline Defense, 100 rounds of .40 S&W in the Px4 and M&P,
then 50 of 9mm in my Glock 22 sbr Micro Roni with 9mm Lone Wolf Alpha barrel,
asked two members if they would like to try the Roni, OH YEAH!
Then 20 rounds of .223 in my M&P 15x with Omega suppressor.
Would have stayed longer but have to work tonight is end of month.

Youngest daughter (13) decided that she wanted to go shooting today, so we packed up the car and drove to Frontline. Shot the M&P 22 and M&P 9 Pro on the pistol range, where my daughter proceeded to destroy the steel targets with both. I bought a box of 124 gr NATO rounds with my last order and liked shooting them, a lot. Not sure they will replace my 147 gr ammo but they will definitely be added to the stockpile. Then we spent some time with the BPM Patrolman on the 500 yd rifle range, where we shot some 55 gr .223 and 5.56 (again, really liked those rounds too and will add them to my purchases in the future). She didn’t quite get the hang of the Strike Eagle for the further shots but owned the 200 yd target. All in all, another great day at FLD

Happy to report there will be shooting at The Battery Oaks today!!! Not just by me. Even though my regulars are scattered to the winds on this holiday week end it will enable others who are traveling to be here to fill the gaps. Old bear is arriving to stay awhile and shoot and BigWaylon and son are arriving shortly. This will be a treat for us. All here enjoy Big's postings. The pictures are wonderful.
So!!! Let the fun begin!!!

Word!

I'm excited about my first trip to Battery Oaks. And if it all works out, my son will get to shoot his "dream gun" today. I'll let y'all just wonder what it is for the next couple hours until I get pics and/or video posted. It might be a bucket list item for some of you...but I can't imagine it's at the top of the list for many 11 year olds. Although, it's on his list due to Fortnight, so it may actually be on 95% of all the lists. :D

...and I did get to the range on Friday for a quick trip. Shot the August rimfire challenge target, as well as the July one I never got around to shooting.

Also put a couple rounds through the 10.5 5.56 SBR. Maybe 12-15? Several to make sure it was still on paper with the red dot. And then one round of 5.56 and one round of 22LR at a Yeti knockoff that was no longer working properly. Really surprised (even though it was at 50yd with CCI SV) that the 22 didn't at least break through the first side:

Test fired 2o rds of Nosler 80 gr .224 HPBT under a max load of BLC2. Rifle was my M16A4 20" clone with ACOG TA31 4x. Four in one hole. Need to stretch its legs on some distance. Don't think I'll have time though as I'm cleared to go back down range very soon.

As @BatteryOaksBilly said, my son (11) and I headed out to Battery Oaks this afternoon...

Billy and @old bear were there ready for us. We toured the facility, checked out some of the firearms and decorations, and chatted for a bit. Then the call came that lunch was ready. Ronnie Sue (sp?) had salad, spaghetti and garlic toast ready to go. Yum-O!!

Then it was time to shoot for a bit. We kept it fairly simple. Shot a couple of things from a table and chair on the porch, which was 74 yards from the target. A Thompson and an AK from Billy, and a 10.5" 5.56 SBR that just happened to be in my truck.

The Thompson was the "dream gun" I mentioned earlier for my son. Not from a historical perspective, but from the Fortnight video game. He loved it. Impressed me by hitting an 8" circle, from 74 yards, with open sights. He did say on the way home that it was awesome to shoot...but a little different than he thought. Thanks to the video game, he thought he was going to full auto dump a 50 round drum from the hip.

A few pics from that scenario:

IMG_2028.JPG IMG_2030.JPG IMG_2033.JPG IMG_2034.JPG IMG_2035.JPG IMG_2036.JPG IMG_2038.JPG IMG_2043.JPG

Notes:
- the tables (spools) and chairs we're shooting over are the "hang out" area when the range is cold
- we're sitting on the porch of the bunk house
- directly to our right, maybe 30 yards away, is another shelter that has a bench that gives you 100 yard range to the targets
- if we spun 90 degrees to the left, we could shoot across a small pond at some targets that are 110-130 (can't remember what Billy said) yards away
- behind the tires is a big gong that can be shot from 300 yards away (from a completely different part of BO)

And then a video. You can hear one steel ding with the Tommy, then you can see the big red circle on the far right swing with a couple of the AR shots.

...and then we moved closer in. Another guy showed up (not on CFF, I think), and we all tried the Wizard drill. Now, let me explain what that is for a minute.

Four distances. 2.5 seconds allowed for each distance. Intended to be a drill for you to use your EDC and draw from concealment. The course:
1. 3 yards, one shot to the head, one handed
2. 5 yards, one shot to the head, freestyle
3. 7 yards, one shot to the head, freestyle
4. 10 yards, two shots to the body, freestyle

Again, 2.5 seconds allowed...includes drawing from concealment, and yes only 2.5 total for the two final shots. The other guy (drawing a blank on his name) goes first, shooting a 9mm...not sure what it was, as I was more focused on the process. Fred goes next with a double-action revolver. Both of them were using belt holsters...I know Fred's was OWB and I'm not sure on the first guy since I was on his other side.

Billy goes next with a G43, front pocket carry. I believe the rules state for pocket carry you get to start with your hand in your pocket. Billy's fast. Be ready. :D

I go next. As background, I've never shot in a competition of any kind. I've never shot when drawing from a holster, whether concealed or not. And I've never shot using a timer. I spend most of my range time just shooting junk, instead of practicing any useful skills. So...to say I was a bit intimated by the thought of trying this drill, with spectators (including my son), is quite the understatement. But no way I could take a pass on it.

So I go through the thought process of clearing my shirt, drawing the pistol (and making double sure not to put my finger on the trigger too early) and firing. Take a couple deep breaths and finally say "yes" to the shooter ready? question. I don't recall my times on all shots. The first was a hit, and I think it was 2.35 or so? The second and third was a combine one hit and one miss the miss actually hit the target stand, about 2" to the left of the head. Had it been slightly lower it would've hit his shoulder. So, a miss, but not way off. One of those two shots was something like 2.51 or 2.55? Not sure if the other. Last distance was two hits, 2.80 seconds. So...I would've failed the test. 4/5 hits, but only 1 or 2 of them in the alloted time...yet none over 3 seconds.

For the record, I was shooting a G23 from my OWB leather from Jason and my Fat Boy from Curt. Shot the JHPs that were loaded in it. It does have a Crimson Trace grip on it, but I only recall seeing the dot on one shot...lots of sunshine today.

I was very pleased. Had no idea what to expect. Definitely gives me a good base to build on. It's a drill I'd gladly try on my own. And I know it's not the same as IDPA (or whatever the initials are), but it lets me know that meeting up with @Butter or @Mike Overlay or @FatboyFlash might not be as terrifying as I've been thinking.

Then we let my son give it a shot. We modified the rules a bit and let him start at a low ready instead of drawing from concealment. He was more focused on the time than shot placement on the first run and I think he came in under 2.5 on 3/4...but only hit 1/5 shots. He was using a G43 Billy loaned him. Later he tried it again with a red dot equipped Ruger Mark something and did 4/5. Most of the time in the 2.5-3.0 second range. Very proud of him. He said he spent most of the time trying to find the dot. I think an open RMR style sight might be better for this drill.

Here are some shots of Lucas running the drill, and a short video (I didn't record one stage for some reason?). First pic caught him after the shot, and you can see where he hit the guy in the shoulder instead of the head. You can also kinda see my shot on the bar directly above where he hit.

(He does have plugs in...we were doubled-up for the AK, but he didn't put the muffs back down for the drill)

IMG_2045.JPG IMG_2047.JPG IMG_2049.JPG IMG_2050.JPG

And a video showing 3/4 stages:

Overall we had a blast. Couldn't ask for nicer hosts. Really looking forward to the M&G. I saw the setup for the competition, but didn't want to attempt it ahead of time. Gonna be fun to watch everybody try it.

There is definitely no reason to be terrified of meeting any one of us, unless you’re allergic to Mexican food. Stay away from Mike Overlay if you are.
