My wife is looking to move up from a 1500 hemi to a 2500 cummins turbo diesel. There has been a few occasions where I think we've pushed the limits of her truck. It did it but I believe its finally time for her to move up to something more heavy duty.

What should I look for when looking at used diesel trucks? Supercharged and turbocharged cars I know a lot about. This would be the first diesel in the family. There is one with 6200 miles on it that's a 2018 where the guy traded it in for something bigger. Everything appears stock minus wheels, tires, and leveling kit.

Look for something unmolested. I would go with something a few years old so. DEF delete and an EGR delete can be done easily with parts already available. Maintenance is key as with anything

The 2018 we're looking at has only the things she'd put on it. Wheels/tires/leveling kit (not lift). We'd leave the DEF and EGR alone so we could enjoy the warranty. 6200 miles on it

Right. Still under warranty leave it all. You wont be sorry with that cummins.

Do your research. all of the diesel had issues at one point or another. some more recent.

Dont be afraid to delete . If it's used as diesels are meant to be used ,a delete isnt necessarily as important as a weekend pavement pounder

I deleted my 6.7 ford and have recouped the money spent 2x over just in mileage. I deleted mine under warranty and didn't have some of the issues as non deleted trucks.

Again research the Cummins and dodge transmission.

IMHO you couldn't give me a later model dodge diesel

Both the 6.7 ford and the 6.7 Cummins on the dodge are great engines with very few big problems. Either one you won’t be sorry about.

The ford runs slightly quieter but not a big deal.

Dodge used have tranny problems but I’ve heard from a few mechanics I trust that stopped being an issue in the 2500’s around the time they started with that new 6.7 motor.

If only we could get a 6.7 with an allison behind it. Then we wluld be set

I picked my 2015 F250 up with 23,500 miles on it about 2 1/2 years ago and bought the extended warranty. It runs like a champ and makes me happy now at 60,000 miles. I change the oil every 5K and fuel filter every 15K. The only I had is the condenser went out in the AC. $100 out of my pocket and it was fixed the same day.

Used to the Cummins got WAY better fuel mileage than a power stroke. Not sure about now. Ima Cummins fan. If I was gonna get another bigger truck it would have a Cummins

Thank you Gents. I'm finishing up the paperwork now.

I drive a 2016 Dodge with the 6.7 and the DEF...about 60K on it, no issues. Cant go wrong with the Dodge.

Mine looks just like LaVoy 's truck to include the cap, but minus the bullet holes.

Pics and a burnout are in order i do believe.

Heh pics but definitely not a burnout. Tires are expensive

Chris, for what she’s pulling I wound look for a 3.73 rear end ratio, 4wd, 3/4 or 1 ton.

3.73’s will pull a tagalong horse trailer just fine, and not sacrifice much in the way of fuel economy. You don’t need anything lower than that (such as 4.11)

Crew cab’s ride smoother than single cab pickups.

Obligatory pics of her truck

Nice I have enjoyed my 2014 2500. It doesn’t catch many miles but most of the ones it gets
It works for.

That looks awesome. Love the wheels.

Thats the same for my wife's truck. It's a 2014 with 34k miles so we decided to keep that one and make it my ride and she'd gets the 2500 because of what she does, she needs the bigger truck.

Thanks, luckily it came with the wheels and tires. Hardly any wear on them.

Make sure you call it a “Cummins” and not a “Cummings”. Else you will get made fun of.

Nice truck.
Heh Thanks. Phone corrected my spelling in the first post.

Sweet truck!

Good lookin truck!

I have a '95 Ram 2500, 5.9l 12v. I bought it 4 years ago with 90k on her. Body is perfect, and I get 18-21 mpg no matter what's loaded or pulling below 6,000 pounds. You'll be happy with her.

I've got a 13' Duramax that I bought from my Dad. Just rolled over 28k. I went through 3 EGT sensors aand finally deleted the truck and wish I did it sooner. I'm getting 19-21mph no matter how I drive. I have a tune for when I need to tow the skid steer. For everything else it's at 500hp/1,000tq. Don't be afraid of deleting it once you get to that step. I kept everything and can go back to stock everything.

I would at the very least put a Air dog system on it. It's a better fuel filter system than any OEM on the road.

I had this conversation with a man I know recently. He too was talking about the high price of tires.
In the mid and late 60s a set of UniRoyal Tiger Paws, or Firestone Wide Ovals, or Goodyear Polyglass tires cost 10% of the cost of the new car you put them on. $3,000 SS 396-375 HP Chevelle....new set of tires was $300. Now THAT was high.

Today a $50,000 Dodge [If you can get a new 4 wheel drive diesel for that] and a set of $2,500 tires...5%.

Pretty much the same with firearms and salaries comparing 1950s with today. Guns are cheaper than ever. 1956 Colt Python retailed for $125. A Month's net salary...A Month. SAAs, Pythons, S&W 52s all required a hell of a commitment to own.

Good luck with that price for a new one it would be a very base model. There crazy now, stickers on them were 65- almost 90k when I looked a while back. New fords are even more. Reason I won’t have a new one I’ll let someone else take that hit.

I get what your saying about the percentage but its still hard to stomach the thought of $900-$1300 for tires depending what you get, its also hard for me to stomach the thought of Paying 1/2 to 2/3 what a decent house cost knowing it will depreciate rapidly.
