helped a buddy swap one once, but it was pretty much a like-for-like...

Swapping mine out this weekend, and the current one doesn't match up to the parts/manual for the new one. Just wondering if I can swap it out without making any alterations to the current design.

Here's what I have:

And here's what the instructions show:

1. The new one only comes with a 90-degree elbow. Any reason I can't just connect the straight pipe right back to the new one?

2. The new one has the diagram where it goes up and mentions an air gap. Any reason I can't simply knock the DW plug out of the new one and hook the existing hose right back up?

My plan would be to do a basic remove and reinstall, but figured I'd ask. I'm already having to replace the whole flange, and would rather not replumb anything else if it wasn't necessary.

Don't overthink it, you seem to have it. As Mirac said, you should be fine. The toughest part for you is replacing the flange since old ones can be a PITA to get off, then hopefully your existing plumbing will line up without modification. My first disposer install required a little re-design of the plumbing but it only took 1 trip to lowes and like $6.

Let me know if you have any issues, I'll be around this weekend.

Thanks. With having to replace the flange, I'm figuring one possible trip to Lowes or HD. Assuming I get the old one removed, I'll mock up the new one and see what may have to be done. Hoping it all lines up fairly close.

They are pretty standard as far as lining up. You should not have a problem.
Use the new 'o-ring' on your old flange and pipe, should be perfect.
Dont go reefing on the plastic pipes when you retighten. Try to keep channel locks off it at all possible , Set them hand tight, then run water. If it doesn't leak, give it another Erk tighten by hand and recheck. I check by drying it off, then recheck with a paper towel , it will show a drip easy and quick.

The reason for the air gap is so sewer water can't backup into the dishwasher where clean dishes are and cause contamination/ biohazard. Some states require a 'licensed' plumber to use/connect, some don't. Good idea, I don't think necessary in residential.

Easy peasy, you got this.

Edit: scratch that, youre putting in a disposer.

you got it... lucky you nice simple swap. I just had to replace a double silk with a single disposal. Had to reengineer the p-trap and vent...

Yeah, not too worried about the pipes. With a wife with long hair and 10yo son with a mop top, I've disconnect and reconnected every drain in this house multiple times. Also swapped out faucets, toilets, and dishwasher. Was just wanting confirmation on the two disposer connections. Thanks!

And I wish it was as easy as using the new o-ring on the old flange...but I have to change out the flange due to a different brand disposer being used. :( (But not really complaining since the new one was free! :D)

Your new one must have come from Amazon.

After 15 years or so, our disposal began leaking. I shopped around and ordered one from Amazon. It arrived and I managed to install it (didn't even use my sledge or Stihl). All good.

A couple days later, a second disposal arrives. I contact Amazon and arrange to ship back the duplicate. It gets picked up and a few days later, I receive credit for the duplicate I never paid for.

No wonder Amazon doesn't make money.

Actually it came from a member here. I happened to ask the right question to the right person and he had several sitting around at work that were NIB and just taking up space. :D

You know what's worse than having your new disposal outlet being about an inch out of alignment?

Getting a call while you're elbow deep in 18 years of sludge questioning a $400+ charge today at Sam's Club on your debit card...which wasn't mine. So, they shut the card down. I go to check my account, and they let a $900+ charge go through at Sam's yesterday. And since I bank at Telco Credit Union, no Saturday hours...which means I wait until Monday to file a dispute and start the process to get my money back.
