DIY backyard fireplace

Looks like I have some work to do. You just put into action what I've been thinking about doing for almost 10 years. She's a beaut Clark, she's a beaut.

Let me just tell you. It ain’t for the faint if heart. And I’ve still got firebrick to cut and mortar in.

That is a beast. I now feel like a slacker for my little pit I built up in W. Jeff. Guess I’ll have to step up my game in a year or two after we knock out some landscaping projects. I’ve got some boulders being brought in next week. Lots of boulders.

very nice work.

now for the dumb question... does gravity hold it all together or is there some kind of mortar/adhesive involved?

Ten tubes of paver bond to hold the completed courses in place while I smacked the new courses into place with a four pound dead blow hammer.

But mostly gravity holding onto four tons of block.

I need to find some manly outdoor fireplace tools. I had some cool duckhead brass tools I bought nearly forty years ago that had a bronze patina when I left them behind at my last house two years ago, only because I thought I was just going to be stuck with nothing but these lame gas logs behind glass in my new den.

Great job, looks awesome!

I'd like to see this in person. I'm considering the same thing at my next house being built this coming year.
The operative weights and measures to bear in mind are:
Excavate and move 1.5 tons of dirt.
Replace with 1.5 tons of crush n run for the base
Move from the street and stack 4 tons of block.
Move another 1/4 - 1/2 ton of gravel for front of fireplace

You’re only 30 minutes from here.

Which town?

I’d probably recommend having the footing poured with concrete if I did this again.

Sounds like a job for the kubota

What's the fire starter underneath?
Those bricks of wood chips and paraffin set on a half a brick, easier than splitting kindling.

How are coals supposed to pop out and burn a hole in your shirt with a freaking screen? WTF, that’s just wrong.
My centipede lawn goes dormant (read: haystack) in winter.

Maybe a GoFundMe for a huge LED 4K Tv with a fireplace video? We don’t want your home to burn down.
Listen you yankee forker, don’t make me drive back to the containment area to teach manners.

Ha! I just feel bad that you now have to live with an enclosed, safe, Yankee type fireplace. Most folks in the south can let their ashes fly free. I fear all those years in the containment area have really affected you.

And is there really much difference between the containment area and Fuquay now?

Do you know I used to put you on ignore?

Where's that "Harumph!" button?! :D

I hope this Fireside Chat becomes a regularly scheduled event.

Y'know, since FNFC seems to have gone ghost on us...

I was planning on a fire tonight, but no luck. The next few weeks look tough, but there will be a mountain fire posted ASAP. Even if I am shunned by Fuquay.

Yes. That was a point of pride for me. But the fact that you stopped means you are getting wiser in your old age. Congrats!

...czfool now goes back on ignore. :(
I’m old and soft now. I don’t put you on ignore.

But heaven only knows why. Deep down, I think you are actually normal.

None of us are normal. Normal now is those creatures you see on TV crying over hot days and bathroom rights. We are all freaks now. And for the foreseeable future. Our petty differences are no big deal.

So my spark arrestor allowed a few undocumented sparks to get through its defenses.

The whole point of building a fireplace versus a firebowl or firepit was to better contain sparks and embers. Embers are contained, but I need to work on the sparks some more.
