DJI drone company developing program for authorities to track ALL DJI drones

Time to jail break your drones or skip DJI
I don't (yet) own any, but I can say this is s brand I won't buy because of this.

Not that I would intentionally do anything illicit, I just don't agree with this BS mentality of being deliberate in bending over to govco and the cops. Privacy is a right and the po po can go suck down a donut.

DJI has had a lot of troubles with unauthorized customer data transfer by their drone control apps, malware, the US military abruptly banned DJI from use or being on military installations and now this electronic spy tech. DJI has also had unprecedented influence over US/FAA drone policy. I was telling someone just this morning, after my only DJI drone was stolen this weekend, that I may abandon the DJI ecosystem altogether because of these and other issues. I am concerned the foothold DJI has gotten in the US with data collection and creeping into our policy making. I really don't understand it.

Sheriff’s Office adds drone to the force
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office recently purchased a $2,000 drone to help with investigations.

“We can use this if an older person has wandered away from home, if we are looking for someone in a certain area or if someone is injured in the woods,” said Lt. John Humphries.

I spent $1000 on a drone photography platform a year and a half ago, and the DJI was hands down the best for the money but I would not give them my money because they were already dabbling in this kind of crap. They were working with the FAA to implement no fly zones, etc. and it was clear they were headed this way. In terms of technology they blow most of their competition away with their range and feature set, but they maintain complete control over not only where you can fly it, but the hardware itself. You cannot fix anything yourself, you have to send it back to them even for a broken wire. Typical centralized/dictatorial thinking.

"We thought this was cool and it's not like it's our money, right?"

What kind did you end up getting?

A Horizon Hobby Chroma 4K package that included an extra battery, backpack, and a handheld pistol grip thingy that uses the camera and gimble for earthbound photography. Also the controller has video built in, the DJI drones require an iPad, etc.

I moded the controller with a patch antenna that gives me about twice the range but still nowhere near what the DJIs can do.

That's very cool. I really like the built-in display in the controller. You can always add an outboard amplifier to the controller if needed. I'm pretty sure these drones work on 2.4 or 5.8GHz, so you would need to know the frequency of your rig and get the right amp.
