Do you even lift bro?

I am on tail end of working with a trainer. Would continue but can’t afford to. We are doing mostly barbell but also crawling, lunges, various combos of movements in supersets but all rooted in squats, presses and deadlifts. When I’m done with this guy, I’ll go whole hog into 5x5 using the StrongLifts app.

Here is my workout from over the weekend. I paid extra to have accessory movements and I think the warmups too.

Oops, how did this get in here?! You gotta live, right?! [emoji12] Plus I was home alone with kids this weekend.

I also use the 5x5 app on and off, it's really nicely laid out. I'm not big or hardcore gymrat, but it works nice and auto increments, or decreases if you miss enough days hahaha. You also get the option to modify and do 5x3 and 3x3 as well.

PS thanks @gaberelli Now I'm starving

.......something that has helped with strength in the past when you hit a plateau with the heavier weight training...splitting firewood with a sledge/wedge, flipping those big freggin tires, and hitting the heavy bag with light weights attached. Deepsquatter.com ??? Used to have aomw good info.

Ran the Starting Strength novice linear progression for four months. Used a heavy-light-medium template for eight months. Probably going to run another quick linear progression this week and try to get back to lifting three or four days per week.

Just finished doing a 2 month stint with FST 7 at the end of Dec and started a modified version where the combo exercises are for strength. That will last me until the end of Feb, where I will switch to more body weight and HIIT exercises in anticipation of getting my Spartan trifecta before my oldest starts college in Aug

Since I started this thread I guess I should tell what I run. I've been running Wendlers 5/3/1 for about 5yrs now and love it. It's helped me get back on track with trying to be as strong as I was back in HS (25yrs ago).

I hadn’t heard of 5-3-1 so searched it. Here is Alan Thrall’s take. He is a Starting Strength disciple just for transparency. Any thoughts on his take?

I think Starting Strength is great for people that don't really know their way around a bar. It really starts you light and helps reinforce proper form with the lifts. 5/3/1 is also for beginners because of the many programs inside of it. You can't go wrong with either.

Nice. I’ll take a look but going to give 5x5 a go for something i just need to put a ton of thought into. It’s pretty brainless....

I haven't ever run any programs or weird stuff. I was taught old school and its always worked for me. I lift with a pyramid progression for major muscles (Bench Presses, Lat Pull and seated row and squats). Warm up, Reps 10-8-6-4 back to 10 with weight going up 15-20 pounds as you go down in reps.

Chest and Biceps monday
Back and triceps on Wednesday
Legs and Shoulders on Friday.

Tues and Thurs is cardio and abs.

I stick to mainly strength training without getting too far into definition.
Example for Mondays
Flat Bench
Incline Bench
Dips
Chest Flies
Chest pull over

Curls
Reverse Curls or Hammer Curls

I've been lifting weights since I was thirteen. Started just training for sports, then I thought I wanted to be the next Dorian Yates and my routines changed, and my diet. I've trained for power lifting, body building, cross fit type stuff and sport specific programs. Honestly about every 3 months I get bored and go to Bodybuilding.com and pick a new program. I like Kris Gethin's approach and have ran a few of his routines. I'm currently in the middle of Neil Hill's Y3T.

Just make sure to follow any program as written untill u really understand the concept.....just remember a bad plan that you believe in in is better then a good plan you don't. If you need any help please PM me and I'll do what I can. I've been lifting for 15+yrs and have done stupid crap and good stuff

His take makes perfect sense: if 5/3/1 is working for you, keep on with it. If it isn't, then you may need more volume on the main lifts.

Probably will take you up on a chat sometime. I’m a total noob and have really valued the trainer but just can’t afford to keep on with it. Going to give 5x5 a try and am sure I’ll see good progress since I’d probably see good progress with ANY program that I stick to being so new to the gym.
