I have a couple of cans that could use some love. Called up a local gunsmith and he said I needed to find a smith with his SOT to for them take possession of it.

The internet seems to have different opinions. Any of you guys know anything about this?

I don’t think so...but I’m not 100% sure if that.

They’re not receiving it on a Form 3, which is what the benefit of a SOT is. And they’re not making new parts, which requires that status.

I thought the same. I'm gonna call a different smith in the AM and see what they say. I'll update when I have a definite answer.

You could also spray them with C-Series Cerakote. If you don’t have a sprayer setup, a PreVal sprayer works fine. I did six of my Form 1 cans that way.

I think Tungsten Grey and Burnt Bronze were the colors.

Looks like you did a great job.
My spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. lol.

I know that if I attempt this and mess it up, I'd obsess over it until I just take it and get it professionally refinished.

It’s really not bad. I did them all with a PreVal sprayer.

Single sprayer is <$6 at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

They show a 2-pack for ~$8.50. They also offer a kit with a spray handle:

...and remember, silencers are tools. Don’t worry about them being perfect looking all the time. ;)

Your right, your right.

I'll give it a shot.
The key is in the prep. If you don’t have a sand blaster (and I don't), at least rough them up with some sandpaper and then clean with acetone.

The C-Series is high temp, but also air dry.

...or just buy grill paint if you want them black, and the ability to touch them up after every range trip. :p

This is what I do...except I get Rustoleum 2000 deg engine paint. It's a couple dollars more per can, but worth it to me.
My Recce 5 gets super duper hot on a 7.5 SBR and that 1200 deg grill stuff doesnt last but a few range sessions lol.
I dont particulay care about the looks, for me it's more about preventing any surface rust once the finish bakes off.

Not to derail the thread or anything, but a funny side story about my high temp paint...

A few summers ago, I had to clean up our wrought iron tiki torch holders (6) a bit and repaint them.
So, I did the rust removal and told the old lady to wipe em down with my denatured alcohol and spray them when they dried.
I went up the hill to do other things and when I came back down they were definitely painted.
With my 2000 deg paint.
Woman had two cans empty and was working on emptying another.
Not only had she painted the torch holders, but she had moved on to the black metal outdoor chairs we had (4) and was painting them, too.
She didnt particularly understand why I was a bit upset, after all it was only spray paint, until I took her to Lowes and made her buy me three new cans.
She understands now and she is very attentive about which can of paint she picks up.
As a joke, the little hussy even put a can of it in my stocking that Christmas lmao.
Wouldn't trade her for anything :D

This! I used to be OCD about my rifles and guns . One training class where you throw your rifle around in and out of dirt and mud will get you over that.
