I went there yesterday after a multi year break and was surprised to see that the general retail area of the place was gone. Now there is just the cigar store.

It made me sad to see that, apparently this happened circa 2015, the original owners idea was to have the men go smoke while their wives perused the general store and went shopping. I still remember the place it sold a lot of cheap useless stuff but it was always fun to look around the cowboy hats, dusters and assorted riffraff. And on the way there to see many billboards boasting along the way "biggest selection of bathrobes at JR's!" and similar nonsense.

The cigar store is as it was back in the day, lounge is closed of course. Prices have gone up a lot over the years but they did pretty much anywhere. I only saw a total of 4 employees working.

On a different note, the place used to be posted but isn't anymore. Wonder how that came about?

Brassieres to Chandeliers at WACKO prices the billboard on 77 used to read.

Always managed to stop and grab a few cigars.

Are you talking about the place on I-95?

If so, I hate that even tho I do not travel to Baltimore any more.

There was one in Statesville and Selma, NC. JR's was a fun place to go back years ago.

I’ve ordered cigars from them online. They were one of the few places that reliably stocked this Japanese cigar I loved (brand alluding me now). The online store also had lots of great gift sets I would get for people now and then. Didn’t know there was a brick and mortar here in NC. Will have to check it out one of these days.

Out in Burlington, yeah?

Yes, they do still have brick and mortar locations in Burlington and Selma, I went to the former off I-85. And the store really was fun even tough I rarely bought anything (guess neither did anybody else and hence here we are).

I frequented their lounge in Mooresville when I lived there. Great spot to smoke, but I often had trouble with the sticks I bought from them, so I usually would just go there with a smoke I ordered elsewhere and bought some butane or Bovedas or something so I wasn't mooching off the establishment.

Lew Rothman sold the company some years ago. He was my hero. Owned a cigar store and married a beauty queen. It's been bought and sold several times since then and each time the prices went up and the selection went down. I order from Thompson Cigar in Florida now. Cigar prices have gotten ridiculous. Good reason to quit smoking them I guess but I do love them so especially when out on the range.

I would highly recommend you don't order from Thompson and go with Famous Smoke and/or Cigar Monster (deal site ran by Famous), or Cigars International.
Thompson does not take care of their sticks.

Just a recommendation!

If you get a deal from Cigar Monster it takes you to Famous to checkout. - Most orders made from Monster are free shipping, and that carries over to anything else you get from Famous on that order. Always got to my place in NC in two days.

Bestcigarprices.com is where I buy online now.

I have about 450 premium handrolled cigars in my stash. 95% of them came from Cigarbid. It's an online auction site owned and operated by Cigars International. Not uncommon to get a $230 box of cigars for $120 or so. They also list singles, 5 packs, samplers, and merchandise. If you use them, select 1 day per week shipping. That way if you win multiple lots over a few days, they combine the shipping instead of sending stuff everyday and you paying full shipping.

I always thought that JR’s made their real money selling cigarettes by the case to yankees returning north to high tax states in the spring, the rest was just a reason to keep the places open the rest of the year.

There used to be busses full of people coming down from the communist north stopping at the one off 95 in Smithfield, then turning around and going back.
