I bought some Guinea keets (chicks) from a nice older lady near Randleman today. She also sells peacocks.
We already have free range chickens and guineas, and 3 male goats,
and 2 livestock guardian dogs (Great Pyrenees).
We like the idea of having a peacock, but I had heard they climb on your cars and scratch them up, or would rip thru a soft top (I have a k5 and a samurai).
But she said she has had no issues with behavior like this.
Looking for advice - would I run into potential behavior problems between a peacock and other animals (especially the dogs) or a peacock tearing stuff up or constantly wandering off?
Thanks!

A neighbour had a few when I lived in VA for a bit. I hated those things with a passion, they would roam our yard (he free ranged them) and would get damned aggressive with people and animals who dared to come out the house. You had to chase them out of there with a stick, and a long one at that.

I wanted to shoot and roast the suckers but alas the lady who owned the house preferred I didn't, they are supposed to be good eating.

Eating them sounds better than watching them eat ticks and mice. :p

They can do one and you can then do the other.

Noisy buggers too. Scared the crap out of me at dusk the first time one got all obstreperous from the treeline.

Growing up our neighbors had some ... when they’d “call” they sounded like a woman screaming or such. They did roost in trees and on top of their house but never really roamed off their property so they didn’t do anything at our house. I think I remember the guy saying when you get them young you keep them penned up for a few weeks or so and it makes them almost have a homing beacon built in and they have home programmed into them.

As to getting some ... try it ... if you don’t like them you can tell us what they taste like.

We had peacocks here on the farm for over 10 years. Yes, they will climb on top of cars and scratch the hell out of them. We were never able to successfully train ours not to do this.

Also, they will roam, but usually come back home. In the spring (mating season), some members of the flock will go on a walkabout and not return.

In addition to scratching the hell out of our car roofs, one of our males like to perch on top of the house and he loosened up the ridge cap on the roof.

It’s fun to hear them calling (sounds like something from the plains of Africa), but their poop is really nasty and personally I was not sad to see the last one go.

Ha! So dress 'em, smoke 'em and eat em.

Thanks Scott! That is enough info for me to make up my mind - we are not getting one. :)

My buddies gramma had one that would chase cars, that was entertaining!

I like them and don't think they are anymore troubling than guinea hens. We had guinea hens and they would peck the dead bugs off your car. We couldn't stop them from roosting in the porch. When they would roosting on the porch they would poop all over if.

The dang Guineas are the ones I hate, noisy and they will scratch your truck up so bad it makes you want to cry.

You’ll be happy when the coyotes kill off the last one.

I hit one with my truck coming home in the fog one night. I didn’t see it until BLAM, and it screamed and scared the sh!t out of me! I cleaned feathers out of my grill for a week!
