I know this happens a lot. I am suer noone here thinks it could happen to them. I see it often. On a country road, under 30MPH well, maybe.... But I just saw a huge dalmation in the back on haywood ave onto patton avenue one of the most busy and dangerous intersections in Asheville. Bumper to bumper traffic. This was a 4 door truck with noone in the back seat. Come on guys, if ya care for your animals then take care of them. https://www.puppyleaks.com/please-dont-drive-dog-back-truck/

Meh. I used to drive with mine in the back all the time. As long as they’re trained correctly they’ll stay there.

As far as putting them in the cab in a seat belt, I don’t care if anyone else does it but I’m not going to.

Eh. My last border collie rode in the back of every vehicle I owned until she was too old to jump in anymore. Then she used a ramp for a while. She was trained starting at about 6 months old not to get out unless I asked her too. Only time she rode inside was of it was raining.

I saw a German shepherd riding on top of hay bales stacked 10' high on a farm truck doing 55 on the highway. Amazed was an understatement.

Used to be a fella in my hometown that had an old rusty truck with a piece of carpet affixed to the top of the cab. He had a dog that was always with him..always. That dog surfed all over town on the top of that old truck, standing up. They were our local celebrities. HEY!!! Ya gotta take your entertainment where you can find it!

I've always "wanted" a dog to ride in the back of my trucks. Somehow they always end up helping me drive. With directions and what knot. I too, love mine far to much to take the chance....but it does look cool. You know, 30 mph max creeping down the back roads.

Mine gets tied in so he doesn’t scratch up the side of the truck. He can get his head out in the wind though.

Lucy isn't an animal, she rides inside like the person she is. LOL.......

Protect your pets, don't make them ride in the bed. The wind is going to burn their eyes and God forbid a bug hits them in the eye, or you have a wreck and they get tossed into traffic to be run over. Don't do it, please don't do it......

If you believe a 10 year old kid can ride in the back of a trunk and never screw up and fall out, then your dog should be fine.
They both have about the same attention span... and its a good way to clean up the gene pool.

I was on a motorcycle trip and caught up to a flat bed F450 or something going down a mountain in Idaho. I noticed 2 heads peeking out from behind his tool box or fuel tank. 2 border Collies ran out and went crazy barking at me. The truck didn't slow down at all. I just knew that I was going to see two dogs flying off the side of the mountain! I backed off so I didn't have to witness their deaths.

The dogs did look like they were very comfortable with riding on the bed. I bet they do it all the time. I just didn't want to be behind them if they did come off. My dogs always ride inside a crate in the car.

I would love to let my boy ride in the cab. But he gets car sick every time. In the bed no issues at all and he knows to stay until he gets permission to get out.

Hell to this day I will still ride in the back of the truck sometimes. You guys know, depending on where you sit in the bed it can be not that windy right?

There is a fella like that here. Carpet on the toolbox. Runs up and down the super curvy mountain road to Cashiers every day. That Blue Heeler knows the road so well she goes to the “high side” before every turn lol. She even knows the one super sharp corner and hops into the bed for it:rolleyes:

There's a local boy here that does that with a Jack Russel. Carpet on the roof. Apparently that dog can smell a bear 100 miles away and he uses him to flush the bear outta the bush.
Drives down the road, dog starts barking his butt off, stops the truck and that little bugger will jump off and start chasing the bear. Craziest s--t you ever saw.

I cringe too seeing a dog in the bed, but I figure the dog and the driver have an agreement that I don't know about. Besides I can't really talk. My little foo pom has been riding motorcycles with me since he was 5 weeks old. He's 14 now. I don't take him on the bikes anymore but he still rides the atv like a pro.

I don’t see an issue with it but that assumes the owner understands the risks and the dog is well trained. Of course, many people are stupid, lazy, and self-centered so this doesn’t always work out.

I was at an event in Cornelius a few years ago, a guy in a T-top trans-am turned left at the light and his large Rottweiler that was standing with his paws on the windshield, went flying out, rolled a couple times in the street and onto the curb. There was a huge crowd of people inside large tents who kept trying to catch the dog and eventually cornered it. Not smart and the dog was clearly terrified and shaken. The owner didn’t get over there for at least 4min.

Our dogs are very well trained but I won’t put them in my truck bed. They ride in the back of our 4Runner, exclusively.

Hell, I don't think I was allowed in the cab of the truck after I turned 6 years old.

Yeah that sounds about right. Can't tell you how many miles I've been in the back of the truck as a kid. To the beach, to the mountains, all over the place as a kid. I usually preferred riding back there. Only thing better than the back of a truck was the back of a Subaru Brat, it had seats.

Yep it definitely depends on the dog.

My last 2 dogs would ride in the bed all the time. One I could leave there if I had to run inside somewhere but the other one not so much.

The good one, the lab, hell she used to ride in the passenger seat of my Jeep with no doors on. I’d stop at a store and say “stay” and she’d be chilling when I got back.

The dogs I have now are too young and and not trained well enough to give them a ride in the bed of the truck.

And I've discovered a vehicle I must now own...

Unless some idiot cuts you of and the dog is projected into oncoming traffic.

According to American Humane an estimated 100,000 dogs die each year riding in truck beds. And that’s not even taking into account all of the other injuries veterinarians see from dogs being driven around in the back of pick up trucks.

Meh. You can’t control everything in life.

And none of my dogs have fallen victim to anything like that.

No dog I’ve ever owned had any issues riding in the bed of a truck. Even so, I’ve never been 100% comfortable with it because stuff happens.

I used to ride in the bed of the farm trucks, well sorta, we sat on the side. Dog rode down in the bed. Never had one jump or get injured.

That said, I think farm dogs, like farmers, are genetically superior to their city cousins simply because out on the farm dumb stuff kills the dumb ones, so I probably wouldn’t put a city dog in the back of a city dwellers truck and drive through the city,

They're doing better than the 1.3 million people killed each year in car accidents. In an wreck, unbuckled in the cab ain't much safer than the bed.

My dog only ever ride in the back when she rolled in something dead or awful smelling (think POOP!). I'd secure her back there with a leash to keep her safe. Otherwise, she rode up front in the passenger seat as my navigator!
