I was cleaning up our vehicles for winter and it dawned on me that I haven't used a key in years (2002 Ranger). So I put the key in both doors and neither will turn. The electric locks work.

What should I use to free them up?

An aerosol would work best of course. WD 40? An aerosol graphite product? PB Blaster? I hate the smell of PBB so that will be last on the list. I have Kroil liquid and various spray lubes that would lubricate but maybe not dissolve the rust, if that's the problem.

Any suggestions?

I would try this, it says safe on electronics. So you shouldn't have to worry about it messing up the automatic door locks.

A lot of the suggestions are for maintenance products. Maybe I didn't make myself clear

The locks on my truck haven't been turned with a key in 10 years? Maybe more. There is most likely rust involved

Once I get them to turn, then I will be more careful about routine maintenance

Don't use a penetrating oil like WD40 or PBB unless you have rust to deal with. They will attract grime and end up gunking up your locks. Start with a lube like 3-IN-ONE Lock Dry Lube.

  • Clear, quick-drying, premium lock lubricant to loosen and protect all types of stuck home, auto and commercial locks
  • Easily reach into narrow lock mechanism with the attachable straw or use the wider spray pattern to refurbish and protect the entire lock
  • Dries clear to the touch within minutes and is safe to use on metal, wood and most plastic surfaces.* *Except clear polycarbonate and polystyrene.
  • Size is Ideal for Automotive, Marine, Home and Commercial locks, and padlocks. Clear, quick-dry formula won't attract dirt
  • Aerosol formula penetrates quickly and deeply to loosen stuck locks. Leaves long-lasting, corrosion protection film

I’ve gotten exterior household locks to work that I couldn’t even insert the key in, with just silicon spray.

Superzilla. Only kidding, never used it, I use Silicone spray in door and ignition locks.

I've decided on 3-IN-ONE Lock Dry Lube

It should be here in a couple of days, I'll report back with the results

Thanks to all
This stuff typically works great. My son bought an old 4Runner last year and I thought at first the ignition and door keys were different. We actually pulled one of the door cylinders to get the key code so we could get door keys made. He had a couple keys made and they looked identical to the key he had that worked on the ignition. I used some of the 3 in 1 and both drivers and passengers doors freed up.

Well, the 3-IN-ONE came this afternoon.

A tiny squirt in the locks and it freed them instantly. I did my wifes car for good measure

I'll have to say I'm impressed although there are many products that would have done the same thing

We're good to go now

Thanks for the suggestions
