I was about to start a thread, opening day is Saturday. Does Weeks farms in Dunn still have folks hunt their cut corn fields for $10 a season?
If so, who wants to go this Saturday?

As much as I have heard about that place around Dunn, I can only assume you left a "0" off that number. I haven't heard of a day hunt that wouldn't cost you $40-$60. For $10 a season, I'd send him my money just in case I was ever down that way.
I used to be $10 a head for dove. I haven’t been in 5+ years.

Got a email from NC Wildlife early this week. Two new dove fields on game lands.
Dove Season is Almost Here: Get Ready to Hunt on Nearly 1,400 Acres of Dove Fields
The Wildlife Commission has prepared nearly 1,400 acres on 26 public game lands for the opening week of dove season. These dove fields have been seeded with millet, milo, sunflowers, sorghum corn or a seed mixture to attract mourning doves. Staff will harvest, mow or burn these fields in time for the opening of dove season. A few highlights:
- Establishment of a new 18-acre dove field on the Riegel Ridge tract of Juniper Creek Game Land, located in Brunswick and Columbus counties
- Reestablishment of the 242 dove field (16 acres) on Bladen Lakes State Forest Game Land (Bladen County), which had not been managed since 2013.
That first one on Juniper Creek Game Land is near my house. Going to have to find that when I get home. Got a new Turkish 12 ga here in Afghanistan and have doves flying all over the place. Don't think they let me shoot some on the FOB. Besides only have Breaching and OO buck.

I got lucky for the first time in 17 yrs and was selected for a permit for the Lower Roanoke Dove field on Sat near Williamston. I also bought a permit ($8) for J. Morgan Futch. I think you can still buy the Futch ones online. I've never been there but plan on trying it Tue. Nontoxic shot is required for Futch since it is actually a duck impoundment.
I am just curious and want to learn, but I can't find that in the regulations regarding dove hunting. Seems steel shot would be a little expensive for a dove hunt. I have hunted numerous times on part of Butner that has a duck impoundment but the areas for non-toxic shot are clearly marked and the dove fields are not a part of that. Point me in the right direction please.

Since I used to shoot way too much the only thing I buy these days is low brass field loads and found I killed just as many birds. Instead of going through my regulationos buck which is here beside my chair I had already gone to the two web sites listed. Honestly, I still could not find the reference to non-toxic loads for dove. Could you point it out to me please.
Ahh ok I see your question. There are only certain game lands that require non toxic. They are some of the ones that have duck impoundments. It is not an overall requirement for dove hunting. My comment was related to the JM Futch gameland that I think tickets can be bought for.

We are getting there. As I stated in an earlier post, some of Falls/Butner Game Lands has waterfowl impoundmets which are cleary marked and lead shot is prohibited. However, the dove fields are just down the path and lead shot is OK there. It isn't a game land wide restriction. It appears to me from your post that the entire Futch property is restricted to non-toxic shot but I could not find it. It really is insignificant to me as that is way to far for me to go for a dove but it just seemed like a broad statement. Kinda like the guy that said you couldn't have a firearm in a boat on a certain river during deer season. He was addressing a new hunters questions about the gamelands there but as it turns out, the regulations state in a motor powered boat. The new guy was planning on heading out in a canoe with a paddle.

It got so slow, in what should have been an amazing field with standing and recently cut down corn and Miller, I ran through the rows hoping to flush some up for my son.

Morning hunt was beautiful! Evening hunt wasn't bad. Sure seemed like it was mostly "native"birds. Then we cooked some big "ham steaks" pineapples and chicken breasts on the fire-bowl. Wife made pintos, biscuits, and roasted okra. Was an awesome day. We all got doves and we all slept well! Awesome weather for opening day.
Looks like a great time. I think I saw 2 dove on the driveway yesterday and that was it.
You talking about the dove field on 125 just north of Williamston? Did you go yesterday?
Yes I did. It took 17yrs to win this lottery. If you have a permit for tomorrow PM me your number and I'll fill you in on where to sit etc. I noticed a pretty good pattern in the afternoon. The morning was slow due to the cold front.

I dont have a permit. I live right down the road from that field. Always did my dove shooting on private land. Did you have any luck?
I stopped by last Sunday for 2 hours to scout and they were flying good. It is a big deal for me to take a day off and Sat I normally work so I wanted to make it worth my while. The coldfront passed through Fri night and shut them down Sat morning (I expected the morning to be slow and it was due to the frontal passage). I stuck it out and all left by 10am. At around 3pm they began to fly again and about 8 people showed back up. From 3pm to when I left at 530 it was wide open, shoot and reload as fast as possible. In all, I took 3 between 6-9am and 12 from 3:30-4:30. I did get shot from 3oyds away by a hunter. Bird landed between us and he shot when the bird flew. I took a head and chest full of singers. Felt like hornets. I cussed him out, but realized he had a kid so gave up. Come to find out later that his kid had shot another group. I'm not talking ballistic trajectory where it "rains" led I'm talking horizontal barrel shots.
For those that don't have electronic ear protection. They are really worth the $60. My ears (what is left of them) are good to go today. I turned the amplification up and could hear people yell "bird" yet they cut out the shotgun blast. It really made the day pleasant.

It used to start here in NC at noon but they changed it to 1/2 hr before sunrise. The other way it was really a social occasion. People cooked and walked around and shared stories and looked at guns etc., etc., etc.... I miss it that way.
Sorry you had a bad experience. Glad you weren't hurt too bad. I have been rained on many times but never had a horizontal shot before. We always make sure everyone knows there is no shooting horizontally ever. Sounds like you managed to salvage the day.
haha yea there's nothing for you to apologize for! Getting rained on is the fun part, that comes with the territory, laughs. this guy was a dope. Prior to dawn, everyone was spread out very, very gentleman like, we all had chem lights or flash lights on to space out. Not too close, just right. This guy decided to move after the doves would not fly directly over him and his son. Come to find out this would be after his son shot the other two guys (I didn't know about this until later in the day). The other folks were awesome and worked great as a team of marking and calling birds. It was really nice to see strangers work together.
