Fixing to put in a drive, I need to build it up a bit then put down ABC. Do I need to rent a compactor for the fill before I cover with ABC? I will probably put down some road fabric first. Always appreciate the thoughts.

Depends, what are you using to place the fill, and what kind of soil is it?

No need for the compactor assuming normal ground not a muddy marsh type conditions., put down the ABC. I’m assuming your building. After project is complete spread 3/4 stone topped with 3/8-1/2

What’s there is pretty firm now but it’s bumpy, I’d say a pretty high clay content. Using a sand/clay mix for fill. I’ll have to spread with a dirt pan and grade with a grader blade or box blade, only have a small SCUT so it’ll take a little. Drive is about 300’

If you want it to stay flat, you need the compactor. If you don't mind two tracks with a raised middle, you are good to go.

Get rid of all of the topsoil and organic (roots) first. I would suggest at least 6” of compacted crusher run (ABC) graded so that it is crowned slightly in the center. BTW the 6” measurement can be loose crusher run, which should compact to around 4”. If you’re able to shape it and then run over it with a rented vibratory roller, the road will last much longer.
