Someone is flying a drone over my neighborhood. It has hovered over my wife and kids in the swimming pool about 75ft or so. Same drone chased my daughters little dog, flying low in my yard with my daughter yelling and scared that it was going to hurt her dog. I went inside and grabbed my shotgun, and just walked outside with it. Of course it is illegal to shoot at drones, but apparently they thought I was about to shoot their expensive drone, as it quickly flew away when I simply walked in my yard with the shotgun, with no real intent at shooting it.

Yet I wonder what the ramifications of shooting said drone would be considering it is being used to abuse animals? In my view it would be defending your property, but I’m not sure how a judge or jury would view it. I don’t have time to go to court to find out either. If I had more time and was an awesome retired grouchy old get off my lawn type old man like some of you, I’d probably consider it. Hopefully they think I was serious when I walked outside with my shotgun, and don’t come back.

Hmmm...

Go high tech. They're likely using camera tech for flying, so they can remotely pilot it.

Jamming may be illegal in your area, but using lasers to blind the camera may not be. I've got a 2,000 mW blue laser that might glind the xamera for a few minutes. Not cheap, though.

Call FAA, file report. Call local SO, file report. Next time call and ask for an officer to come out. Meanwhile get video of said drone as clear and close as possible. Next time I'm in your area I'll bring my tube gun and we'll shoot some skeet.....
As far as I remember, drones must be registered with the FAA. Wanna bet your neighbor kids don't know that?

Find a mirror, do some awkward lip movements and flexes to warm up for my lesson I’m about to give.

I’ll wait...

Ready?

Repeat after me: “I was in fear for my life.”

Your turn.

No, not “I am afraid of my wife.” That’s for a different thread. Weird slip of the tongue there...

Say “I was in fear for my life.” Nothing more, nothing less.

Gooooooood! There ya go!

You’re now trained for damn near anything.

You’re correct. $5 for 3 yr registration.

I make a point to go up to at least 200 ft before traversing my neighbor’s property.

Unless they reversed it already, there is no more registering. They did away with it not long after I sent them my $5.

When I fly mine in my neighborhood, I'm always a max altitude. I think it's about as courteous as I can be.

@Silver_Bullet I'm almost betting you won't have any other trouble if the person did spot you with the shotgun. Just my guess.

Does it look like a good drone or a 100 dollar one from walmart? The nice ones have a very large flight radius (5 miles for some) but according to the ffa laws they are not supposed to be flown out of eyesight. So I would log a complaint with the man and see if they could track it down. I also like the Idea of going all American Sniper on it with an air rifle from about 3ft inside a back door if possible.

Don't know where you are located but depending on your proximity to certain airports your neighbor might be more or less restricted in what he can do. Best thing might be to accumulate maps and regulations... maybe go door to door if it's a small neighborhood.

Figure how who's doing it and scare them with some big government fine. Personally I would turn it into my own personal detective case... then I would spoof it and add its components to my personal collection.

It’s one of the good ones, it came from a considerable distance as it flew out of sight when it left. It appears to have some sort of smart flying technology that keeps it from flying into objects. It stopped almost instantly when chasing my dog, was about 4ft from running into a bush. I got a good look at it, had multiple camera views. Looks like a thousand dollar drone.

Yeah I would make a police report then file a complaint with the FAA. I would bet that there are more complaints than just yours. With those complaints on file I would think it would insulate you if you have to take action in the future.

I thought I have seen a 12ga shell that pops out into a net that would down a drone without damage. That is what you need!
I think this is what he needs...

Neighbor of ours was flying a remote controlled airplane over our pasture and spooking my girlfriends horse. He would loop it over our pasture and then back across the road over his house and back again. I went and had a nice talk with him and it hasn’t happened again. Explained that her horse was worth more to us than his plane, and if it flew over our property again I would bring it back in pieces. I try not to cause issues, and expect the same from my neighbors.

Didn't the dude in Ky get away with downing one with a 12ga? Thought I read somewhere all the charges were dropped. IIRC, it was harassing womenfolk at his place, too.
Anyhoos...I woulda turned it into a loose collection of gizmos and scrap plastic.

Yeah they brought back registration.

Counter-drone.

This. If I still had my flying wing that was set up to fly FPV, I would kamikaze said multirotor just because my plane would survive while their multi would fall out of the sky.....

All BS aside, every time it happens, law your local law enforcement. Contact the FAA. Nothing will come from the latter, but there will be a paper trail. Pictures and videos of encounter will help your case

Don’t shoot it, you’ll be in trouble and will probably have to replace it. Sucks I know but it is what it is.

However, if they are flying it low enough to the ground to chance your dog, the. They are probably close by. Grab you a casting net catch the thing. Wait for said owner to come and get it.

Btw the number of folks that actually registered their stuff is a small percentage in the whole hobby. I never registered mine and won’t ever down the road. But I fly fixed wing and respect people’s privacy.

Jamming is illegal and well ittle RTH anyways. Just get a net and go the non lethal route
