Couple of years ago I purchased 3 AR lowers while they were dirt cheap.
I completed 2 of them, and "almost completed" the 3rd as a 300BO.
All that I "thought" I lacked was a flash suppressor.
@Tim gave me one a few months ago, so I go to install it last night. Got it on and pulled the charging handle. The bolt wouldn't go
fully forward! It had been fully forward! Could not figure out what the issue was, and ended up having to pull the buffer tube to get it apart.
Got the tube off and couldn't get the bolt out! Something was rattling around in there, so I shook it and the buffer detent and spring came out!
At first I thought that the detent and spring had somehow come out and somehow jammed everything up...but how?
Ends up that I had installed a Fail Zero carrier and bolt.....without the firing pin, cam pin, or retaining pin! The carrier and bolt arrived to me with the bolt in place, and evidently I didn't notice that it wasn't "fully assembled". Bolt must have been just right on installation because it WAS fully
forward before I pulled the charging handle.
Had I known this, I probably could have rotated the bolt until it would go fully forward, and avoided removing the buffer tube!
I was blaming the Fail Zero, as the first one that I ordered was out of spec and wouldn't even fit in the upper, I tried it in several uppers and it wouldn't fit any of them, OA diameter was too big, but Fail Zero made it right.

So....were the cam / firing / retaining pins in the box? Nothing cam assembled but the bolt was shoved in the carrier? Am I understanding that right?

They were not in the box....not included in the sale. Yep, bolt was in the carrier out of the box.
