Reminds me of the time I was a kid and Dad and I went fishing.

Game warden trolled by in a john boat and asked if I had a fishing license. I said yes and showed him mine.

Trolled over to Dad, sitting on his tackle box, and asked if he had a fishing license.

Dad said "Yep" and just sat there watching his pole.

After several minutes, the game warden left.

I asked Dad why he didn't show the guy his fishing license.

Dad said "He didn't ask to see it, he asked if I had one."

(There's a deeper story to this, involving the state of Indiana and WWII veterans.)

I'm a SC resident. I work in VA.

Had been keeping an eye out for a decent price for an AR-15.

A Bass Pro shop had an ad out for the S&W M&P-15 at a great price. Called them up to verify they had them in stock, then drove out to get one.

Got all the way to the part where I show my ID as I'm filling out the paperwork...

    "You're a SC resident?"

    "Yes."

    "I can't sell you a rifle."

    "Why not?"

    "It's against the law."

This was wrong, but there was absolutely nothing to be gained by disputing this. So I left.

Called Walmart, posed the question: "I'm a SC resident. Any problems with me buying a rifle?" "No, sir."

Called a gun shop in Norfolk asked the same question. "No problem." This guy thought my story was funny. He asked me what I was looking for and I told him, and the price I was looking at. He laughed and said "We've got the same rifle here for $50 less, and that's our regular price!"

So I drive straight there and bought it.

I ended up buying a second one a few weeks later, as that one ended up in my wife's hands when she saw it!

I'm more p*ssed that Bass Pro passed what was obviously a store policy off as "law". But I was perfectly happy taking four figures worth of mt money elsewhere for their stupidity.

And yes...I called the store manager and told him so.

Some of you guys may have heard about Don's Guns in Indianapolis, for one reason or another.

He used to have a line in all his commercials: "I don't want to make any money! I just love to sell guns!"

I visited his business a few decades ago. If there were ever a line of horse sh*t spoken at or about a gun shop, THAT was it!

Dumbest thing I ever heard in a gun shop was “where does my left thumb go?”
Said by me while trying some revolvers

That reminds me... I stopped into the Hope Mills Walmart some months ago at the onset of the great ammo-fest of '19. It was after dinner out with the wife at about 830pm. I wandered over to the ammo counter to see if they had slashed prices yet. The chain was up, suggesting that nobody was working the counter at that time. No big deal, I'm a night owl and I worked midnights for years. I've called managers over to sell me late night ammo more than once.
I'm peeking over the counter, leaning over the chain, minding my own and doing what I can to get an eye full of prices without disturbing anybody.
Then I hear footsteps running towards me and I hear "HEY HEY, YOU GOTTA GET AWAY FROM THERE. IT'S CLOSED"
"Uh, i'm just looking at prices - that's okay, right?"
"NO! The counter is closed and we can't sell ammo. It's the law!"
I'm still new to NC so I politely ask "I'm sorry, what? it's against the law?"
"YES! IT'S AGAINST THE LAW TO SELL AMMO AFTER 8PM. YOU CAN'T BE OVER HERE"
"okay, no ammo, but the aisle and all the accessories are still open... you know what, never mind. I'm just gonna go"

Rule of thumb - the more powerful the revolver, the more thumbs forward you should hold it for a really solid grip...

I’ll play. I just got my girlfriend into shooting about 6 months ago. She didn’t grow up with guns like I’m sure most of us did. Rather, she grew up in a city rife with gun violence and feared them. We took it slow and she learned all about safety before moving to dry fire practice. She had several weeks of safety instruction and thousands of dry fires before we took a trip to the range. The first visit was a little overwhelming and the noise was a lot to get used to for her, but she had fun and decided she’d go back with me. Fast forward a few months and she’s shooting an sr22 lights out up to 10 yards, she’s a respectable shot with my G17, and she can handle a 357mag no problem. Obviously, I’m beyond proud and very happy that she enjoys it so much. She even takes trips to the range solo now and again.

ANYWAY, one day recently we were browsing after some range time and she’s checking out revolvers as a carry gun. The guy working the counter was talking to her, and essentially told her with a very condescending tone that if she wanted to carry a revolver, it would be best if she altogether stopped shooting automatics. I wasn’t about to make a scene, but I let her know what I thought of that guy, and told her that she’s proven she can handle anything she puts her mind to. I guess on some level I get where he’s coming from, but that comment had me steaming. It was hard not to pop off at him in the store.

I’ve heard some ridiculous stuff in gun stores but discouraging an enthusiastic, accomplished new shooter like that really takes the cake for me.

Best I figure, this fool saw my girlfriend and assumes this tiny woman’s brain would short circuit if she had to learn how to handle more than one pistol configuration. I was heated.

Today, we stopped in a gun shop to pick up some ammo. I ran to the bathroom, and the Mrs. went to the counter to make the purchase. A man and his wife were there, and the salesman and hubby were explaining to her why the snub nosed 38 was the ideal handgun for a woman... "Its simple, all you have to do is pull it out and shoot" "Yup, that's what I gave my wife."

The woman clearly had no clue. My wife excused herself for butting in; but explained that she started with one of those, but she didn't like it as it was too snappy. She now carries a s&w shield in .40 cal, along with a spare magazine, which she couldn't do with a revolver.

My wife is offended they were limiting the other woman to 5 rounds. What is she going to do, throw it after 5 shots? Working a speed loader is a precise skill, and a bit much for the new shooter.

The early Taurus Beretta clones were built on tooling that beretta set them up with.

The women needing simple things irritates me quite a bit. My wife can cook, juggle 4 kids, work as a business analyst, drive an automobile...but suddenly is too dense to figure out a semi-automatic.

I get it, a lot of women who don’t know much about firearms might be better off with a simple 6 shooter as they may never practice any more than a few boxes after they buy it...but that goes for many many men as well.

I’ve also seen that by and large women are better at learning new tasks and taking instruction than most men are because we let ego get in our way more often.

Dumbest thing that I’ve heard in a gun store was the counter guy advising my wife to carry her S&W Airlight PD with an empty chamber under the hammer.

He didn’t seem to understand that revolvers made in the last 50+ years would not discharge if dropped due to the transfer bar design.

He was a “Cowboy Action Shooter so he knew what he was talking about”.

I was browsing with my friend looking at revolvers for his wife. He remarked how she could barely handle a .38 so I suggested taking a look at a .22 since that beats using a sharp stick. Salesman says "I wouldn't carry that, it'll only tickle them."

Bloomturd gave an interview and said you only need three rounds, if you can't kill a deer in three rounds, you shouldn't be hunting. Not said in a gun shop, but still a pretty stupid statement.

That is true of the early Beretta 92 clones made by Taurus. Beretta built a plant in Brazil to fulfill a Brazilian contract for Beretta 92s. They later sold the plant to Taurus.

I don't call the Taurus clones as they are just an earlier version of the Beretta 92 on Beretta machinery. Better to say, licensed copy. I've got several Khyber Pass Beretta clones on the wall :)

I had to explain that to my mother in law. The gun store clerk told her to do this in a modern 5 shot revolver.

Not exactly "said": Garner Cabelas, my wife was looking at XD's - because that's my EDC and she really likes it, and shoots well with it. A customer sees what's going on and butts in "That's a pretty big gun. You should think about something like this" and reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out his LCP, holding it out toward her in the palm of his hand.

I was in Academy last night. After a customer left, the two guys at the counter had this conversation. It was amusing enough that I wrote notes right after hearing it, so I’d get it right for this thread.

    “Did you see that?”

    What?

“Have you ever heard of a Mini-14? It’s like the M-14 from like World War 1 or World War 2, but it shoots .223”.

    I think so.

“The one that guy just bought was a Mini-THIRTY. It’s like a Mini-14 that shoots 7.62x39 but looks like a Garand”.

After time spent working some in a gun shop, I've heard so many seriously stupid things that I don't even know where to start.

But, one stands out in a shop I didn't work in.

    To wit:

That German MG42 fired so fast there were three bullets in the barrel at the same time.

I tried as gently and as tactfully as I could to explain why that would not only be mechanically impossible, but it also defied the laws of physics...and I thought I was gonna have to fight him in the parking lot for calling his grandpa(WW2 vet) a liar.

When I've got a little more time on my hands, I'll relate a conversation that I was present for many years ago. And no, you really can't make this shit up.
