I was contacted via mail asking me to participate in the 'million veteran' project. https://www.research.va.gov/mvp/ I had a friend in Germany in the late 70s who retired as an AF O6 who recently died from Lou Gehrig's disease. I learned that veterans are way overrepresented in the ranks of LG sufferers, and I thought that someday the Million Vet project might find the answer, so I agreed to participate. I had to go to the Durham VA hospital to get some blood drawn.

I was impressed with the staff that I encountered in the facility. The gentleman doing the blood draw by the name of Roosevelt was extremely helpful. He met me in the hospital, took me to the lab, got my blood drawn, then took me to the office to get my VA ID card, and then connected me with the eyeglass office to explore getting replacement glasses. As I wandered the halls (the place is a maze and a half!) numerous staff asked if they could assist, got me pointed in the right direction and even walked me to the proper place. I don't know the quality of the care there, and complaining about the VA is a sport among vets but my experience there and at the Clayton office as well as the hearing aid clinic in Raleigh was top notch. The place was packed with geezers like me and old people can sometimes be difficult to work with. We get impatient, can't hear or see well, and are sometimes cranky (especially if we haven't eaten recently). The workload must be crushing, given how many veterans I saw as I wandered the halls for the various clinics and labs.

Just wanted to give a shout out to the Durham staff in case any hang out here.

The medical care at Durham VA is a bit different as they contract with Duke for some of the medical care. Good deal if you are a veteran.

I would agree.
My wife goes there occasionally and now the Clayton site as well.
Whenever I've accompanied her it has mostly been very pleasant.
You are right, it is easy to lose your way but just like you said there's always someone offering to help.
