.

Nothing down this way, hour south of Charlotte.

We're not very far South of Sparta. It sounded like two distant explosions before the shake. The whole house (wood frame) was creaking and you could see it moving. We've got a few sheetrock seam splits, stuff on walls rattling, plants waving back and forth, but nothing fell. Pretty cool. Trumps fault, of course, and Epstein didn't kill himself.

Felt it in Galax. Felt pretty strong on the side of this granite mountain.

Stone Mountain State Park is right there near Sparta. Hope no one was rock climbing this morning or looking over the edge

Hmmm ... Trump signed the EO to use FEMA funds to supplement Unemployment Insurance and the next day we have an east coast earthquake. While no major damage has been reported but with 2020 you gotta wonder when is the 8.0 gonna hit Commiefornia or 3 major hurricanes hit hard and they’ll be screaming for FEMA to step in and send cash ... and they’ll scream Trump gave away FEMA funds “they” need now without thinking the Dim House of Reps (namely Pelosi) would not work with the Senate (and Schumer didn’t help there either). Damn, I hope this is not an omen.

I am concerned about the New Madrid fault popping loose. Not a matter of if but when and we will definitely feel it big. The plus to that one it would probably devastate St. Louis...Miss. River changes course and wipes out that poophole?

IIRC there was a major one in the Charleston area way back in the 1800's?.

There is also an ancient fault line that runs up the east coast that run thru the NW corner of SC, enters NC just west of Charlotte and pretty much heads NE splitting the state. It then runs all the way thru NYC. If the New Madrid popped you gotta wonder how the East Coast Fault would react? It’s 2020 ... so we may find out.

Wasnt too bad at our place..no damage to the cabin that I can see.

Kinda surprised we had this here though..figured we left earthquakes behind in OR. Lol. Last one I went through was in feb 2001 that was pretty big like a 6.x ? Prior to that spring break 93.. 5.6.

Durham. Nothing. One nephew lives about 15 mi south, he said he felt it. My in-laws live about 4 mi north, they did not feel it. Another nephew lives in Raleigh, he said he felt it. Weird.

Wife felt it here in Rockingham County

Reporting from burlington, I woke up this morning to a text- hey did you feel it? Me without knowing what they were talking about- no
End of conversation... had to look at news to find out what the text was about. Wife, dog and kids still sleeping

Checking in....
Safe in Wilmington.
Didn't feel a thing!

Heard this on the Green Mountain ham Repeater.

Some damage on hwy 21 in Sparta. Road is buckled near hwy 21. Some homes have chimneys that have fallen, broken dishes , all kinds of things fell in some homes. One gentleman spoke of a tire/repair shop damaged. Some homes have damaged brick .

a buddy that lives in Sparta says the tire warehouse he works at was destroyed.

We felt it, definitely. At least this time it was a real quake. Some years ago we were in California visiting my daughter. She lived in a building with apartments on floors 2-4, and a fancy grocery store on the first floor. One morning as I was eating breakfast I heard a rumbling noise and felt a vibration through the floor. Apparently I got a panicked look on my face... my daughter really enjoyed explaining that it was just a freight door being opened so a truck could come into the store downstairs.

Guess it didn't make it to moore county or we slept through it. Edit: reports from Carthage and vass say they felt something.

Neither the wife or I noticed it. I was out for a walk and she said she was in the kitchen washing dishes and listening to a podcast.

My dad texted to say he was in New River State Park, 12 miles from the epicenter. They felt tremors.

I guess I missed it!

I remember one that made the water bottle on the tv wobble, but that was before 2013, Mom was still here, and I was doing homework when it hit.

The one just before 2 am woke us up. The one this morning was an eye opener. It happened about 18 miles from our house. I sounded almost like a really strong gust of wind at first because of the noise. The shaking was strong for about 8-10 seconds.

Yep. I was at our place about 3 miles south of you. Decent little quake. I’ve been through decent one in NY in 1985, handful of small ones Norcal and conveniently the 2 big ones they’ve had in Seattle. My travel timing sucks. The only interesting thing about this one was that my buddy was upstairs taking a dump and he about ran out halfway done. :D

No damage I could make out at our place 20 miles or so from the epicenter.

If you were only 18 miles from the epicenter, it was.

Haven't seen any reports as to depth yet.

Last one I remember was in the early '70's I think. I thought a very large truck had rolled by the house, until my buddy on the phone asked if I felt that.

I've been saying for a while now that there seems to be a noticeable increase in seismic activity lately.

One of the big ones in Seattle was like this one to me. More of a rolling feel. Or swaying. The bigger one I was in out there was more of a sharp jarring. I’ve got no clue what the difference is or was, but different quakes seem to have different effects on the earth.

My outside cameras didn't show anything, I assume it's because they're ridgidly affixed to the house. One of the inside cameras is mounted on a 18" stalk. It's showed quite a bit of movement along with my mother in law, sitting on the couch, eating ice cream at 8am, wobbling back and forth, with a very confused look on her face.

Rollers vs. Shakers. It's a thing.

Brevard fault zone. http://southernappalachianvitalityindex.org/geology/rock-types paragraph 3. I took a lot of geology courses at Clemson as electives alongside my EE courses, and I spent a bit of time in the field along that fault. Everyone always thinks the Appalachians are done moving and shaking, but nothing on the earth is ever really done...
