Does anyone know if Efird's outdoor range in Albemarle is still open? I'm in Charlotte and need a good outdoor range.

Thanks!

Wow. I didn’t know that. I know he lost his legs to diabetes.

I was there about a year ago and it was still open.

Thanks.

I’m in Charlotte. Can you recommend s good outdoor range?

Thanks.
I spent years looking for a good non-membership place. You're not going to find one in Charlotte. You have to bite the bullet and join somewhere. The most value, to me, is Piedmont Handgunners Association. Depending upon where in CLT you are, it's anywhere from 30 min to an hour drive.

$300 to join up front plus the pro-rated amount of the $125 yearly dues (depending upon when in the fiscal year you join). You join,, pay up, and you're free to use the facility. $125 per year is for the whole family, dependents under 18 yo included.

There's Charlotte Rifle and Pistol which some members here on the forum belong to. Last I heard, they were $500 to join and $200-$300 per year. Plus, you have a 6-month probationary period where you can't do anything without a RSO present.

There's Mecklenburg Wildlife Club--probably the nicest-looking facility and closest (just north of the airport). But last I heard, they were full at 500 members and the wait list was full at 150. I forget what the fees were. The one membership meeting I sat in on showed more drama than a daytime TV show.

For indoor ranges, there's Firepower in Matthews; Eagle Guns in Concord; Point Blank in Huntersville; Blackstone in Mooresville (may have those last two mixed up). But for the fees you'll pay hourly plus using "their" ammo, you will nearly spend what it costs to join PHA in less than a year's worth of occasional visits.

Very helpful info. Thank you!

PHA all the way. Got my renewal in the mail yesterday.
It was a tough financial pill to swallow at the time for us (~$425 to join initially), but at $10/month ($125) thereafter, it's a steal of a deal. The drive is the only downside...and the never-ending work on I-85 always adds 15-20 minutes. But pack a lunch and make a half-day out of it, and you're good to go.

This year is my 2nd year of being a member at PHA, and it's money well spent. I live right by Charlotte Motor Speedway, and with the never ending construction on 85, it can be a pain. I usually go early on Sunday morning, so traffic is mostly a non issue then.

Efird's range is a craphole. Last time I went there you needed 4wd to get thru the mud, there was absolutely nobody to pay/talk to and the shooting bays are gravel with plastic drums for shooting tables. I only wasted my time once. If you're in Charlotte, look at CRPC, and if you're in Albemarle look at the place up in Richfield https://www.shooting.org/Ranges/North_Carolina/Richfield/Riverside_Gun_Club_North_Carolina ) that has 100yds indoors (it's a former chicken house) and they actually have matches.

My hatchback has never had a problem with the roads. I went this weekend and the grass had just been cut and everything was in pretty good order for the type of range it is.

There are like 25 nice concrete tables at the 100 yard range. You send your money to the address on the application form, call the number, or leave it in the slot on the door. Are we talking about the same range?

It's not perfect, and there are occasionally weirdos, but I've never had a huge issue and have made some great friends out there. I kind of like the format, honor system and all. Some of my nicest memories out there are going on a really cold morning, when no sane person would go, lighting a fire in the wood oven and enjoying the peace and quiet.

Same here but since the old man passed his son Landon took it over and is a pecker head. Old mans rule shoot all day for $20 Landon’s rule members only which I understand but the shitter has been broken for years. I’ll stick with hawks Ridge best range in America wooooooooo
