Can any of you handy men or women identify this rather annoying noise?

My older side-by-side Electrolux refrigerator (model EI23CS55GS1) is making an odd, sporadic humming/whirring noise. It's not very loud, but you can hear it when the fridge and freezer doors are closed. It's quiet decibel-wise (I don't hear it over the noise of the freezer when the freezer door is open), but it's almost on a low frequency that makes my wife and I uncomfortable/agitated when we do hear it. It's weird - we can be talking in the kitchen and not notice it, but we can be reading out in the living room and both notice it. To me, it sounds more electrical than mechanical. I've replaced the bulbs, the water and air filters, and have reset the ice maker. I've also adjusted the fridge and freezer temperature levels, but the random whirring continues.

It appears to be coming from the top shelf vent, which is attached to the partition wall between the fridge and freezer. Sometimes, the whirring happens several times a minute. Other times, several minutes will pass without a noise. There seems to be no discernible pattern nor consistent length to the noise; sometimes, it is a quick "whir-whir" lasting less than a second, and other times the same noise will last for a couple seconds at a time.

Here is a super short video clip of the noise - you might need to turn up your volume to hear it (and pardon my wife's voice in the background). I stood in front of the open fridge for several minutes trying to capture the sound.

Any input is greatly appreciated! Other than this stupid noise, the fridge is in excellent shape.

Sound is too short to say. It could be the fan is hitting ice built up on the evaporator from a incomplete defrost cycle. If so it would hit the ice or frost against the blades enough to clear. If, that is if this is the case eventually the fan will fail. And replaced, it will fail again. Defrost relay should repair the issue.

Could also be the sealed fan bearing is going bad which requires fan replacement. You could just replace them both and save a tech visit. Fan is hell to get to but no skills to replace. Two wire hook em up. Defrost relay is cheap.

If you need parts look them up on partsselect.com. Then search Amazon for the cheaper price.

I’m waiting on a part for mine now as the secondary water valve was leaking on a Sears Kenmore. Pretty tough to find the parts and manuals for Sears Kenmore most of the time unless you want to overpay Sears.

If you have an ice maker (whether hooked up (used) or not, it could be the ice making mechanism that makes that noise.
I am speaking from experience from my own fridge.... no water supply, unit set to water only (to not use the ice mechanism) yet periodically it seems to be trying to dump the ice into the ice bucket (ice bucket removed). So, the motor that drives the ice makes seems to run every now and then.

Serves you right too.

That'll learn ya. :p

Agreed on the icemaker. I would bet it's trying to do something. Every fridge with an icemaker I've ever seen had a on/off switch for it somewhere. You need to find that switch and shut it off. You won't need to worry about ice since it's always cold where you live anyway. :p:p

Thanks for the input, guys. This'll give me a couple places to focus on.

Right?? Lol. There's a pond out back so I'll just chisel away some cubes and maybe a bluegill next time I need a stiff drink. I'm already wearing a coat up here at times and the natives (those always-in-shorts dudes and whatnot) look at me like I'm a lunatic.
