Equifax breach exposes 143 million people to identity theft

Turds. The hackers, the staff that failed to protect the data, and the execs that sold shares before the news went public. All turds. We really need to get rid of SSNs for id. It's a joke.

It was on Drudge, too.

Go to this page, scroll to the bottom and click "potential impact". You can enter a last name and last 6 of your social to determine if you might have been impacted.

It seemed like checking to see if you've been affected might be the actual scam!!!

Does that make me paranoid?

No hell no. It creeped me out too. I checked to see if it was at Drudge, before I pursued the link.

I tried that and all it did was give me the opportunity to enroll in TrustedPartner ID or whatever.

No way I'm submitting my personal info to any entity on the internet.

Thats what it told me the first time. I'm a glutton for punishment so I tried it a second time. It still asked to enroll me but it said it looked like i was unaffected. I keep my credit frozen anyway.

I got to the page and couldn't do it. There have been so many data breeches of major companies, can anyone really be held responsible for anything anymore? I mean consumers. Isn't just about everyone compromised at this point?

Yeah, wtf. Hey here is a big hack of our database, now you have to enroll in our new program.

I had a similar interaction with PayPal several years ago, and my account got hacked. Reported it to PayPal, locked everything down... and then they turned around and said (paraphrasing) "in the interests of making your account more secure, please submit your SSN and link your bank account to your PayPal account".

You just exposed my credit card (don't think the number went out, just the ability to charge to it), and now you want me to give you MORE info to lose? Get bent.

I've had my credit frozen for years now. You just need to temporarily unfreeze if someone needs to check your credit, which is done for more things than you would imagine.

Freezing/unfreezing your credit is free in NC, and we've also had ours frozen for years. But someone with your name and SSN could file a fraudulent tax return. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/taxpayer-guide-to-identity-theft

I'm in the same camp....been "frozen" for years. It will take you 30 minutes to freeze with the three agencies and I believe it is the absolute best protection you can possibly have. Even Obamacare couldn't identify me until I temporarily unfroze myself!

DO IT NOW!!!!

Thanks @fieldgrade. I am one of the "affected".
Ugh. So you clicked their "potential impact" link and it said you might be affected? I was wondering if they were just promoting their credit monitoring with that link.

My wife works for Davidson county schools, every employee had their information sent out after a fraudulent email was sent to the main office. What did the county do? Enrolled every employee in credit monitoring with Equifax.

Correct, that is what happened. Then another link where they gave me a date for when I can start their service.

Pshhhh. My personal data was hacked from the Office of Personnel Management a couple years back... My info is already out there.

I am getting tired of these security breaches though. I was caught up in the Target fiasco, then Home Depot, OPM, now Equifax... If Amazon screws me, I'm done, I'll pay for everything in catnip.

Well I have-

Low Income
Crappy Credit Score
No job

They ain't gonna be using my stuff for much of anything except to have something to laugh about

I had to look twice...I thought I posted that. :)

I'm not convinced about this.

I just watched a former FBI agent (cyber crime) and current cyber security expert interviewed on TV. He made an interesting point. It seems this "hack" impacted almost 60% of the US adult population. Therefore, it is extremely likely that each of us, or our "significant other" got nailed. Given that, why provide more information to a company that has proven completely unable to securely manage it? We already know we're cooked.

They're using hardware and systems that are ancient. Computers aren't like old S&W revolvers that go up in value as they age.

NCDOJ just sent out an alert that says the best thing to do is to set up security freezes at the three credit reporting agencies as has been discussed upthread.

The key to credit freezes not being a future PITA is to record the URLs for each site, along with your log in info and PIN for each site, then when you need to unfreeze your credit for a day or two to get a credit card, finance a car, refinance a house, co-sign for your kid's loan or apartment, or even sign up for social security (yes, they check your credit, I guess to validate your ID) it's not too much trouble.

Got it done on Experian and Transunion. The Equifax link kept timing out, but worked from duckduckgo's link, https://www.freeze.equifax.com/ .

It took a couple times for Equifax to work for me but froze when I was setting it up for my wife. The freeze was activated but it never displayed her PIN, so now she has to call them and get this straightened out. I hate them even more now :)

I've had mine frozen for a few years. Unless they've stolen the information for a thaw too, my socialist number is worthless. The socialist number was never meant to be an identifier. Early cards say "not to be used for identification" right on them,

The other thing is any time you put info in a database it's at risk. The only secure way is to not store it in the first place.
