A lot of lessons here:

Keep your head on a swivel when out in public, don't have your head buried in your phone.
Compliance doesn't always work.
Don't expect the bad guy(s) to have mercy.
Stay in the fight, just because you are hit, it doesn't mean you are out.
Don't expect anyone to help you, after it was over the bystanders didn't help him or call 911, they just filmed him with their cameras.
You have to fight for your life.

Ersie is a tough dude.

Black Knight voice-"tis but a scratch. A minor flesh wound. We'll call it a draw"

Read the Article all the way through. Don’t you just love how “some people in the community” say he should have used less than lethal means of stopping his assailants. Yep, 4 armed men robbing him of his money and jewelry at gun point, pulling the gold chain and watch off of him by force with repeated commands amongst them to shoot him and take his truck. He finally pulled his legal firearm and defended his life.

Wait... he was taking a loaded firearm to the airport?
Isn’t it illegal in Kkalif taking a pistol on a plane, or leaving it unattended in a car?

Tough guy, amazing he made it. One thing I took away from it though was that he may have made himself more of a target by driving the vehicle that he did.

lock box in the car.
it's extra fun when you're in the TSA line and realize you're still wearing your holster

Ersie Joyner describes how the armed robbery went sideways

They were going to kill him even though he gave them everything:

"Joyner shot first. He fired 10 times, emptying his magazine." Those who say that 10 is enough, and pass laws against "high capacity" magazines, take note.

The lesson I like is "shot placement." None of the 22 GSWs hit anything vital.

I dont know if the link is anywhere in this thread but there is surveillance camera video of the whole incident. It goes without saying he is lucky to be alive and not permanently in a wheel chair. Wonder if he has re-thought his carry gun choice and mag capacity.

In the video he won UNTIL he chased the bad guys around a blind corner (the gas island) that looks like when he was shot. Instead of retreating or using his car as cover. https://www.ktvu.com/news/ersie-joy...-recovering-after-deadly-gas-station-shootout Watch the video. And he shot that poor yute in the back and shot at a fleeing car. All things that would've hanged a mere civilian . "He also had a right to pursue fleeing felons who were armed and dangerous," Cardoza said. "After all, they could go on with this crime spree and kill other people." No he is not the police.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure how much cover the gas pump structure would have provided, but unless the perps thought to shoot through it he would have made a smaller target by pieing out around it.

With 20/20 armchair quarterback time to review the video, he did have time to move left and use his vehicle for cover rather than run out in the open or even use the pump as cover.

It looks like he shot the perp in red at close range. Did he hit him?

I was thinking earlier this morning about my carry guns, and this was before I saw this thread. My carry gun is a Shield, single-stack 9mm with 8+1 extended mag capacity. I was thinking my other options, P320C, was just two wide at the grip and the slide, to comfortably conceal. But at 15+1, or even 17+1 with standard P320 mags, I'm re-thinking that choice.

And I agree that Ersie Joyner is a tough man.

Still not seeing an argument to carry a single stack, 7 round 1911. Unless he was being attacked by eight people.

The only reason (aside to the classic "because I want", which is 100% valid) to carry more than one mag is for multiple assailants.

You mean just one in the gun? Or one extra.

I carry one extra with any semi auto just to make it fast and easy to clear malfunctions.

I said that a little tongue-in-cheek. Everyone is looking at tactics and all, and I'm just thinking of all those classes with Larry Vickers, Shrek, Pat McNamara, even good little Uncle Sam, who emphasized shot placement.

A few years ago I spoke with Mike Day, a former SEAL who was shot 27 times. He admitted he was lucky, he said the people who shot him were just "shi**y shots" because all it should have taken was one or two to do the job.

Some gas pump nozzles wont do that. There has to be back pressure. Also, if tank full, some of them lock out. Had that happen the other day. Wanted to fill vehicle up first then 5 gallon can. No dice. Had to re-swipe card and all that crap. My winter carry is 1911, 7+1 and two extra 7 round mags in a shoulder rig. Thinking about a quick detach sling and a 7.5" AR pistol after seeing Mr. Joyner's bad day. This has happened in Durham before at a gas station and on the American Tobacco trail. Being attacked by multiple assailants.

Her name is Trepania.
To Trepan is to drill a hole in someone’s skull to let the evil demons out.
She conveniently left out the fact that they had guns aimed at Joyner and threatened to shoot him.

For me it’s finding the balance of what I will actually carry every day, and not ever leave the house empty handed.

My insurance agent once said to me as I was trying to buy more life insurance to cover the family when the kids were small, “Fieldgrade, you just can’t insure for everything."

You see it all the time,
Some thug goes down hard, and his mom is like “JR was a good boy…”
If reporters started slapping these dumb mothers, it would at least be funny

You mean like this?

There was a funnier version with a song called "La Gasolina" playing.

Just at arms length, should they fire a gun they will ignite themselves. Ignore the video ads on the pump screen. I keep close to the nozzle and look at reflection in car windows for anyone who is trying to sneak up on me. Same when walking back to the car at the stores.

"Gardner is the second son Williams has lost to gun violence in just over a year. Her older son, Demazhe Gardner, was killed in July 2020. The brothers were rap musicians and had recorded several songs and appeared in music videos."

That just proves that rap music is bad for you!

Don’t get me started on carrying enough mags to do the job! I carry a dump bag FULL of them behind my seat and within easy each. I never leave home without at least my Hellcat and 2 extra 15 round mags. They better get me in the first shot is all I’m saying.

Yes. Mr. Joyner had an exceptionally bad day. I would hazard a guess that a G43 would be enough for 99.99% of us 99.99% of the time. It's that 0.01% that will kill you every time.
