Finally got an ESEE. I've wanted one since a couple years before the R.A.T, Ontario, blah, blah controversy. I stumbled across the H.E.S.T. back in the day on my search for a fixed blade for the first time. Never pulled the trigger on one, read up on all that strife, almost bought em several times... Never did.
Grew away from the H.E.S.T. but not the idea of an ESEE. 2012 the BIL got one (A 4), I fondled it but still never bought one.
Brings me to Saturday. Never and I mean, NEVER go to Smoky Mountain Knifeworks with cash in your possession. So much and so many wants! If you obsessively research like I do you will find the store to be mostly over priced but some items are deals in general. Because of these circumstances I now prouldly own my first ESEE. A model 6 with "tactical" grey coating and grey linen micarta scales!
Any of you guys have one? Thoughts? Opinions?
What follows is a ramble of an opinion on this knife. Prolly loooong winded but, yeah
I'm playing with it now, will update/edit as the day goes on.
First edit. I'm not fond of the belt clip it comes with. Well low riding anything bothers me. I've had total strangers mention my power lifter width to almost midget length legs, full size pistol drop leg rigs almost get to my knee. So I've adopted a paracord, wrap bs but solid belt rig to run it "scout style" for today. The plastic sheath with a squared angle where the hilt locks makes it a challenge to holster in this carry, even with both hands.
It's feeling nearly as wide as my waist (36" pants) so I've caught on any not "door full open" places I've been. Of course I've never carried anything back there, either. Otherwise I haven't noticed it was there today from mowing, to dishes to washing the truck. Very good so far. No belt torquing or pulling. Keep forgetting its there.. But I do prefer to carry an all steel gov't 1911.....
I went with the six over the five because the five is a heavy mutha and my medium hands didn't get comfortable with it, just to clarify.
The blade is hair popping sharp but has that "tooth" to it that I like personally in some of my knives (small game, fish, where it works as a micro sawtooth when I don't have long cuts, but they may be tough cuts). I haven't cut myself with it yet, so that's good, I think....
Second edit. I carry something heavy and sharp but not axe size for multi tasking outside. Remove this bum leaf in a garden, chop out this shrubbery, remove this limb, behead that poisonous snake because "neighbors kid is oblivious and I can prevent a Darwin Award". So for this instance the ESEE 6 goes against my Camp 10 by Kershaw. Yes look up the specs on it. The camp 10 is longer, heavier and is built to be a chopper, exclusively. For it to be a Chinese steel, made in China and for the price I paid, it is filling this role, very handily. I clear a lot of locust saplings and rhododendron/ mountain laurel in my travels and short of a small chainsaw I will take the Kershaw for anything under 2" all day.
The ESEE 6 can't come close to replacing it in this duty. Will it do the job? Yes. Eventually. But the extra length, extra weight and extra belly of the Kershaw Camp 10 makes it far superior in this task in comparison. Even though it is around 4x cheaper, the ESEE doesn't replace it in this use for me.
Only have phone camera and it refuses to zoom anymore so pics are doubtful.....
