Finally got an ESEE. I've wanted one since a couple years before the R.A.T, Ontario, blah, blah controversy. I stumbled across the H.E.S.T. back in the day on my search for a fixed blade for the first time. Never pulled the trigger on one, read up on all that strife, almost bought em several times... Never did.

Grew away from the H.E.S.T. but not the idea of an ESEE. 2012 the BIL got one (A 4), I fondled it but still never bought one.

Brings me to Saturday. Never and I mean, NEVER go to Smoky Mountain Knifeworks with cash in your possession. So much and so many wants! If you obsessively research like I do you will find the store to be mostly over priced but some items are deals in general. Because of these circumstances I now prouldly own my first ESEE. A model 6 with "tactical" grey coating and grey linen micarta scales!

Any of you guys have one? Thoughts? Opinions?

What follows is a ramble of an opinion on this knife. Prolly loooong winded but, yeah:p

I'm playing with it now, will update/edit as the day goes on.

First edit. I'm not fond of the belt clip it comes with. Well low riding anything bothers me. I've had total strangers mention my power lifter width to almost midget length legs, full size pistol drop leg rigs almost get to my knee:oops:. So I've adopted a paracord, wrap bs but solid belt rig to run it "scout style" for today. The plastic sheath with a squared angle where the hilt locks makes it a challenge to holster in this carry, even with both hands.

It's feeling nearly as wide as my waist (36" pants) so I've caught on any not "door full open" places I've been. Of course I've never carried anything back there, either. Otherwise I haven't noticed it was there today from mowing, to dishes to washing the truck. Very good so far. No belt torquing or pulling. Keep forgetting its there.. But I do prefer to carry an all steel gov't 1911.....

I went with the six over the five because the five is a heavy mutha and my medium hands didn't get comfortable with it, just to clarify.

The blade is hair popping sharp but has that "tooth" to it that I like personally in some of my knives (small game, fish, where it works as a micro sawtooth when I don't have long cuts, but they may be tough cuts). I haven't cut myself with it yet, so that's good, I think....

Second edit. I carry something heavy and sharp but not axe size for multi tasking outside. Remove this bum leaf in a garden, chop out this shrubbery, remove this limb, behead that poisonous snake because "neighbors kid is oblivious and I can prevent a Darwin Award". So for this instance the ESEE 6 goes against my Camp 10 by Kershaw. Yes look up the specs on it. The camp 10 is longer, heavier and is built to be a chopper, exclusively. For it to be a Chinese steel, made in China and for the price I paid, it is filling this role, very handily. I clear a lot of locust saplings and rhododendron/ mountain laurel in my travels and short of a small chainsaw I will take the Kershaw for anything under 2" all day.

The ESEE 6 can't come close to replacing it in this duty. Will it do the job? Yes. Eventually. But the extra length, extra weight and extra belly of the Kershaw Camp 10 makes it far superior in this task in comparison. Even though it is around 4x cheaper, the ESEE doesn't replace it in this use for me.

Only have phone camera and it refuses to zoom anymore so pics are doubtful.....

Don't go see @thrillhill Then... Lol
Luckily(very unlucky). He is a far distance from me. I've almost gone there for the heck of it but thankfully, travel cash and toy cash share the same account. So he hasn't had to put up with me yet.

LOL - i get hurt twofold. I can drive to the store and he only lives up the road so it's easy to claim something and just drive over and pick it up.

If you need pic help let me know

Hahaha, jealous yet thankful I'm not in that situation.

My phone doesn't focus the camera anymore. It's not an uploading problem, but thanks!

I got a kabar made by esee, really like it. Got it from a member here (or at least I think he's here, he was on the OTHER site, thought he moved over.

Pics of the new blade?

Third update. Tried to use it while fixing a circ saw cord I cut off at work. It's clearly way oversized for wire stripping. Blade was actually generally very sharp after the last task and did work. But so much more control with my daily carry Case Sodbuster jr. The small blade of the Case is clearly meant for this sort of thing, whereas the ESEE is way oversized...

I can see already that it needs a better edge/grind, yes factory is surprisingly still hair popping sharp but it's not fine enough for details and a convex would be more suitable for chopping.... Still finding the niche for this super nicely done knife...

@Trevillian , sadly I also fell victim to this ESEE addiction. I think I have 4 E5's, 1 each of th izula, 3, 4, 6 laser strike, 6 and a Junglas. I fell in love with them after intentionally setting out to destroy my first E5. That is one hell of a knife. You will very pleased and well served with that knife. Congrats on your purchase. Enjoy and stay away from Smokey Mountain Knifeworks........ they will bankrupt you.

It's my first... Kind of reminds me of a woman... Hell yeah, I want her around. But I see that I do better without her after 24hrs.....

Still working on how such an obvious piece fits into my world but for now it's "I need this in my life, but.... How does it fit!

Newest update. I still toss the ESEE (still with the weird/ugly but tight paracord wrap sheath) "scout style" on the back of my belt every time I spend time in the yard. It's certainly grown on me (like a fungus). I still haven't sharpened it and use it just like I have said upthread. No I don't baton wood or build shelters daily but it's still hair popping. Well except a miniscule spot on it where I was notching a tree to hang a target board off of and caught a nail head I forgot I put in. That's folded just marginally:rolleyes:

It is becoming a definite, take camping knife and "pick just one" as I think it's marketed for. Yes ideally my pocket knife, kurkri style Kershaw and a hatchet/camp axe all do specific jobs better. It CAN do all jobs, if not as well as task specific ones.

I do have to say that the blade does stain easily. I can't keep it up.... Doesn't affect function but sigh.

To temper that, I have rust issues with ANYTHING blued or bare. Anyone who has met me and l get to fondle such things know I warn them to wipe whatever it is down after I handle it because it will rust if it's not wiped:(

Overall. Man! I know why it's worth spending the money for this type of thing:)

I have a few ESEE's. I have the 6 as well. I use it less than the 5, 3, 4, or Izula. These knives were recommended to me by a friend of the family that taches the Airforce evasion course. He said the ESEE 5 was the only knife they did not break. That is good enough for me.

I just got another machete from @thrillhill. Now you have me thinking I should have grabbed another Esee too!

Well, this thread is going to cost me some cash. I have a 4 and an Izula. Both are excellent. Seems like I need a 5 or 6 to add to the collection.

I have an Izula and a 3. I think the 4 or 5 is next as an all around knife. I'd grab a 5 or 6 if I was really spending a long tough slog through the boonies, but that isn't likely. Besides, I'd probably bring a good machete if that were the case and have a couple smaller knives for utilitarian chores.

What's up with you and all this "rational" thinking?! You could unexpectedly end up slogging through the boonies next week and you'll be like, "Darn, I wish I had a 6!" Buy a couple more. You can never have too many knives.

No. I'll have one or two of the machete's I got from thrillhill. I love me some machete. Very useful all around tool. I have taken down some decent size trees with them. I have kinda found a rhythm when using a machete. They are very energy efficient if you get a good pace and don't over muscle them. Plus they work well on weeds and vines too. Add a small knife and almost everything is covered. I might want an axe or hatchet if building a house, but outside of that give me a good machete.

Now I just have to learn to sharpen mine better. My first attempt looked good, but worked like crap. :(
