I've been using Starting Strength guide for the past year on and off. But looking to change things up and going to a kettle bell program.

I have heard this is good.

http://www.strongfirst.com/kettlebell-simple-and-sinister/

I was doing a basic routine from an older kettlebell book. Really just a circuit for all around fitness. But Between that and all the tree work I have done up on the mountians my back needed a break. Going to ease back in this week.

Great thread to add to the newly created "Fitness and Nutrition" section.

Thanks for starting this thread and hope you guys will enjoy the new section !

Thanks for posting! This sounds right up my alley. I need to get back in shape and can only mountain bike 1-2x/wk max. I also hate running and recently started experiencing pain in my heel.

Just need to find a good deal on some kettle bells now.

Walmart has them, get a 10 or 15 to practice with, then a 35lb (1pood) and that should get you going. Focus on technic and breathing

How do you like this?

What should a woman start out with, kettle bell weight?

A healthy woman should be able use a 15lb bell according to the link. I'm using a 10 to learn the techniques, then will move up to a 35lb.

From the article: One 16 kilo weight if you’re a man, or 8 kilo if you’re a woman, will get it done for most people.

I do like it so far, I was sucking wind after the 3rd round last night.

I have found the 15 lb too light for swings. It is hard to get the momentum and rhythm with a lighter weight. I will use them for a warmup, but the form and swing changes when the weight is too light. For other exercises it works fine though. IMO havng at least 2 different weights is handy. I have three and seem to have everything covered.

How often should I do the kettlebell routine? I'm doing the 30 day yoga challenge also. Should I do yoga 1st then kettlebell or kb then yoga?

My wife started with a 10lb KB two years ago, and is now using 2x35lbs. Without fail, no excuses, 4 days a week. Maybe that will help with input for women?
Thanks.
In a male dominated forum, it's good to hear what other women are doing (wrt the exercise and kb use).
Wouldn't hurt me a bit to start a routine with weights for strength training.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. :)

My wife started with 5lb. But she can't, she had surgery and still has an ileostomy bag. But what's recommended is 15. You can get one at Walmart for like 30 bucks or less. And get a mat.

I'm sure more on here have better info on routines for women. My wife used to do them. But you will be amazed how good it works you.

I wish I could get motivated to get back in shape, but all this talk of exercise makes me want another cup of coffee and a cigarette.

I have 2 kids and 3 grandkids. Actually, I'm about to my exercise pushing my wife's wheelchair around Pilot Mountains May Test. Her electric one has started acting up.

Thanks.

She starts her workout with a 5 minute plank, 200 sit ups, and 200 crunches. She started with some 30-day ab challenge or some such, and it turned into that.

Then she alternates between kettlebell routines she got from two different DVD series- Kettlebell Bombshell or Kettlebell Kickboxing. Well into her 30s she is in the best shape of her life, full-time beast mode. She looks like a female action movie star, with the physical capability to go along with it. She is also a mom for two kids full time, works part time at our church, and babysits me on occasion.

She is conscious of what she eats, but not into all the idiotic eating fad-of-the-month garbage so prevalent today.

The biggest thing she did was make a no-s&%t commitment, and real decision, to do something. Once a no-excuses decision was made, it was just a matter of time.

My primary exercise is swimming, lots of swimming. I do need to get back to going to the weight room more after work. Swimming is before work.
Swimming has definitely given me very good core, shoulder, and back strength. Weight room to work muscles more that don't get worked much swimming.
