Explosion in Beruit

Saw that on fb at noon. That’s one heck of a blast and shockwave!

Damn, the first a fireworks warehouse but what was the second one? I remember a LNG tanker ship exploded about that way years back in Texas ... but the shockwave of that second one was huge.

It might have been a fireworks factory, but that wasn't a fireworks explosion. The orange/red color of the smoke is also very strange.

Area is under hezbollah control.
That white structure where the fire started was grain silos, maybe hezbollah using that structure as a rocket manufacturing factory and the Israelis leveled it.

Any Iranian shipping in the area? From early July: https://www.the961.com/sanctions-iranian-ships-lebanon/

As Iranian cargo ships carrying aid and supplies prepare to set sail to Lebanon, the latter is weighing its options amid a looming threat of additional U.S. sanctions.
According to Al-Binaa, “Iranian ships are preparing to head to Lebanon with food, fuel, and other items.”

Other items. Check.

A grain silo, if not properly maintained, say by a bunch of Islamic terrorists that have no clue what to do and are, as a culture pretty lazy unless there is something in it for them, can explode spectacularly. The dust they create is extremely flammable and basically makes a fuel air bomb. A single spark can cause one to explode. And fuel air bombs are devastating.

There were multiple storage silos ... that second explosion seemed like one big ass one that a series of silos even if near instantaneously likely would be somewhat discernible.

Strange thing is there was a huge shockwave but the aftermath didn’t have a huge all encompassing fire ... so not maybe not LNG like I first thought???

The color of the smoke is all wrong for a grain silo too - which I didn't recognize.

There's no fireworks factory there.

Doesn't tannerite have a similar color? It doesn't have that high of a burn rate.

Yup. The oxidizers in tannerite are generally ammonium nitrate and ammonium perchlorate,

From the interwebs: Ammonium perchlorate is also used by the U.S. military in rockets, explosives, flares and ammunition. The chemistry of the solid rocket booster propellant can be summed up in this reaction: Once ignited, the fuel-burning reaction cannot be stopped.

UPDATE: HUNDREDS OF CASUALTIES FOLLOWING EXPLOSION IN BEIRUT; LEBANESE SECURITY NOW SAYS HIGH EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS CONFISCATED FROM A SHIP ARE TO BLAME
by Kevin Ryan

Major General Abbas Ibrahim, of Lebanon's General Security Directorate, said the massive blast that shook Beirut's port area on Tuesday was caused by “high explosive materials” that were “confiscated” and stored in a warehouse that caught fire.

“Talking about fireworks is ridiculous, there is no fireworks but highly explosive materials,” Ibrahim told local media.

Well that'll do it.

Saw something a minute ago that said 30 dead and 3,000 injured. Which is crap.

ANY number they come up with is speculation

I remember hearing stories when I was a wee lad from my father, who went there when he was in the Marines in the 50s and 60s, talked about what a beautiful city that was. What a shame that city has become what it has become.

Tourism has been picking up there over the past few years, and an event like this will be hard to bounce back from for a few more years.

Edited to add, I just saw a before and after picture. Holy moly, there are multiple blocks around it absolutely leveled. They're not going to know a true body count a number of injuries for days.

I just reached out to a friend of mine, with dual citizenship, he was in Duvdevan when he was in the Israeli army, he's in the US now. I asked him what he thought, he said that he had contacted some former colleagues and the IDF was acting as if this was not an Israeli event. It wasn't a missile or a bomb from an aircraft. We'll probably know more in the coming days.
