What are these things that have fleeced my wife’s tomato plants?

Ron is right. Tomato hornworms. When I was a kid, 50 some years ago, one of my chores was to walk through the garden with a coffee can that contained a little kerosene, and pull the hornworms off and drop them in the can. They will devour a tomato plant.

My Mom and Dad grew 3 acres of tomatoes for a couple of years.
We picked, hand sorted and graded them for restaurants in Winston-Salem when I was around 9.
Yes I walked the rows looking for those damned things a bunch.

I thought cut worms feed on the stems at the base or just under the surface. I could be wrong.

They do. Doesn’t mean that colloquial names don’t cross species. Just look at fig eaters, which folks around here call June bugs, but they aren’t the REAL June bugs. Lol

Get em off quick! They’ll tear up a plant quickly and get huge in the process. I had a larger one that escaped my hunting and stripped a small pepper plant to the stems over about 12 hours. Check your plants often and look for the signs…new chewed leaves/tomatoes and small black or grey poop balls.

The ones you picture above are actually tobacco hornworms. They have red horns with stripes and tomato hornworms have black horns (design on them is a little different too, but basically the same things).

@tanstaafl72555 found out that a black light will make them show up in low light so that you can get them all.

If you see one like this, leave it alone…
