Epic Chophouse in Mooresville is pretty good. Never had anything bad there.

Just checked their website. Temporarily closed, unfortunately, while they fix things after a kitchen hood fire back in October. The site says to go to Fort Mill, SC instead.

Which is fortunate for me, because that's right next to where my youngest daughter goes to school, at Winthrop University!

:D

Rumor has it they'll be open soon. That being said, hood fire means the fire marshall is involved. Speaking from experience the marshall is a PITA when they inspect.

Wife wants to go out tonight, and leave the kids at home. Her idea of going out is walking around, window shopping, then sit down at a nice restaurant for dinner. We'd like to be back home by 10pm at the latest.

Any recommendations on spots for window shopping/ dinner around Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, etc.?

Thanks!

Not the Liberal bastions of the cities you mentioned but a little chilly to be outside window shopping. Crabtree Valley mall then hit Flemings or the Peddler right up the street. Peddler is my choice BTW Casa Carbone has exceptional Italian also right up Glenwood Ave.

Try Iza Whiskey and Eats (Japanese Fusion), in Carboro.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the recommendations! But, we'll have to try those next time.

On a whim, my wife said, "Find a Brazilian Steakhouse." So, we are headed to Leblon in Greensboro. Bring on the meat sweats!

The Gas Station in Saxapahaw.
I just suggest it for everything in that area, honestly.
There are some small shops in the strip it's in, too.

That's a really good idea...

We went to a concert in Saxapahaw about two years ago and keep saying we are going to try the Gas Station. We've heard so many great things about it, but keep forgetting it exists...

When I feel the need to smell the smells of boot camp crossed with Woodstock or the early days of Shakori hills, I go to the general store in Saxapahaw.

This is a GREAT suggestion. Don’t be fooled by it being a “gas station” restaurant. Excellent food!
I called the Brazilian place to see if i needed a reservation, and I'm glad I did. They were all booked up... I'm so happy I didn't drive an hour there to be turned away.

It does smell weird... Weird in a good way...

I smell pizza, burgers, wet paint, and paint thinner all at the same time. It smells good, I think...

She did ask for Brazilian Steakhouse, but not until after I made 20 different suggestions that she hated. So, I still had to fight to get it out of her...

She had crab cakes, fried potatoes, and coleslaw. I had a chicken and avocado dinner salad with ranch. The food was fantastic, and she got to do some shopping after. I was very impressed with the selection of groceries in the general store.

All right...my wife and I celebrated our 28th anniversary last weekend. We hadn't made up our minds where to go yet when our compadrés called.

They weren't going to use their time share this year, so they decided to set us up with it.

So we spend several days at Surfside Beach, SC.

We hit up Greg Norman Australian Grille.

Appetizer was the Aussie Kangaroo dish (I loved it, she wasn't thrilled).

Her entrée was a this pork chop dish...1 1/4" thick and frickin' awesome!

I asked what their "exotic meats" were. Ostrich, it turns out.

"How would you like it cooked?"

Well, ostrich is a big honkin' bird, right? I'm thinking it probably ought to be cooked like one. But our server asked, as if there's really a choice to be made here. So I asked about it.

"How do you prefer your steak?"

"No more than medium-rare."

"Then I'd recommend the same."

So I had the Ostrich dish, medium-rare.

And let me tell you...Ostrich is a frickin' bird that wants to be a cow!

Not the same as beef, but d*mn well reminiscent of it! I loved this, too.

Then for dessert I had the Pavlova (no, this isn't a drooling dog). My wife had the cobbler.

I had ostrich at Bernardins in WS when I was a senior on prom night
As you said, it's more like a steak than a chicken breast or something. Also had a purpleish tint to it, which was odd.

I have had ostrich burger before at a Fuddruckers, which was pretty good. As I recall, it was nothing the average American would have found all that unusual in taste.

But then, that's pretty much to be expected for most meats that are ground up and fat added to make it stick together in patties. You can easily adjust the flavor by the fats added.

Any Fayetteville folks able to recommend Max and Moritz on Cliffadale?
If not, is there any good BBQ in Cumberland? I’ve tried The BBQ Hut which was so-so.

Thanks!

Went to Angie’s in Garner for breakfast this morning and sat next to a chatty couple who was there for the first time. They ordered an assortment of items as they wanted to try some bites of everything. It was fun to hear them after almost every bite saying how good it was, the portions, and having fun with the staff. Well worth the waiting to get in (For my wife and I it was a 15min wait).

If you haven’t been, you’re missing out.

Wife said, "lets go to the gas station" this morning.
So we did.

Saxapahaw General Store and Gas Station was, again, delicious.
I had the meatloaf sandwich, she had a caprese sandwich or something. She ordered potato salad as a side, I got the duck fat fries. DELISH!

We tried a new BBQ spot in Winston this past weekend, East of Texas. They just opened up but seem like they have their stuff together already. Brisket was really good, we got a two person platter and there was plenty of food for us. Awesome outdoor area.

@HMP might be a good date night stop, @Jeppo might be a different locale for a lunch meet.
So we just went there for lunch today
My wife is looking at a location in that complex - the owner of EoT is the owner of the whole place. We're there, Im hungry, Ive got to write a paper and cant do it on an empty stomach...lets try it.

I'll be honest - sticker shock.
3 tacos were 17 or 18 bucks for the brisket ones
I did 1/2lb of pork belly and it was 18
Then we did the large tots and queso for a side to split, 8. They making some money on them tots ha

It was good food, for sure. And we will return, but Im not used to spending 45 bucks on two of us to eat lunch (we both got water, too)
Maybe we'd come out better with a full pound to split, I didnt check the menu prices on that.

As stated, my wife is HOPING to get a street-front spot in that complex and it's very nice and up-and-coming area, we love the location and feel of the place. But it'll have to be a date-night thing at those prices. IM BROKE! ha

We’ve only gone twice now. And you’re right, it ain’t cheap.

Southern Roots in Jamestown is great. My wife got salmon and I got the trout stuffed with crab. It was GOOOOOD.

Indoor and outdoor seating with a fireplace and heaters. The time before we went, It was a pretty good weight for the inside so we decided to sit next to the fireplace. We had a little romantic dinner as I sit on the hearth and we pulled a propane heater over right above my wife.

We were kid less Saturday so went off early in the morning for breakfast and snacks. We went to The Young Cardinal Cafe in downtown Winston Salem. The service was definitely sub par, but she was nice enough. They have a bunch of different Eggs Benedict, I got braised short rib that had onion jam on it. It was a bit sweet but was very good and the short rib was super tender. I got a Bloody Mary that was crap mix and a splash of cheap vodka, I’d avoid that. My wife got an omelet and sourdough French toast. Both of hers were really good, she said the coffee was crap. Overall I’d like to go back and give it one more shot but if it doesn’t blow my sox off the second time I’d skip it. No pics on this one.

Next we road a few minutes up the road to a bakery I had recently heard about called Bobby Boy Bakery. It won a James Beard award first of the year. There was a line out the door, the people were very helpful especially when we told them we were first timers. We got a raisin bun, cinnamon bun, chocolate croissant, vanilla croissant, apple croissant thing, and I got a molasses cookie for me.
IMG_0602.jpeg
Then she made it to the dessert section and picked out 2 eclairs, key lime pie, and a chocolate coffee cake.
IMG_0601.jpeg
She also got a coffee here and said it was fantastic. Last night we tried the desserts and they were all great. The little sign on top of the one eclair is edible chocolate. The chocolate coffee cake was probably the best cake I’ve ever eaten. My wife felt the same way about the key lime pie. The molasses cookie was perfect, I should’ve bought a dozen.

We broke open the pastry box for breakfast this morning, they were all delicious as well. My kids demolished the cinnamon bun and raisin croissant. I ate the apple croissant and my wife ate the vanilla croissant of course we tried each others and they all were great.

I’d highly recommend this place. @HMP I know you like to explore WS so this would be a good place to hit up.

@DCGallim
Been to both
Bobby Boy is OUTSTANDING!

Next time youre in the area for brunch, I suggest 4th St Filling Station in West End...not far from where you were, a few blocks form YC

@HMP @DCGallim

I second 4th Street Filling Station. It’s good.

Jeffrey Adams has some of the best steaks and bread in Winston.

If yall like Indian food check out Nawab off of Stratford. My wife’s work gets if catered a lot and every time I always hear about how good it is. They threw my wife a going away party and asked what to cater and I recommended Nawab. Oh man it was good. I can’t tell you what I ate but everything I did was great.

This just popped up in my recommended news feed. Made me think of this place.

It’s been too long since I have visited Skylight Inn. I’m sure folks like the additional menu items, but I remember it best when they truly only sold BBQ, slaw, and bread (sheet cornbread or a bun for a sandwich)

Two more in the Triangle.

Saap in Cary, near the downtown park. Laotian food. Great service. Super delicious. Get the mee ka tee—the unholy baby of tonkastsu ramen, Thai curry, and egg drop soup.

Scott Crawford’s new place in Raleigh is amazing. Brodeto. I had the best octopus I have ever had in my life—fork tender. The polenta was fantastic (cooked in whey from the delicious in-house straciatella cheese) and the wood-fired Croatian herb bread was unreal. They make great coffee, too. Good espresso pulls with loads of chocolately flavor.
