Fish Bites on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington. We ate there last year, and again this year. It's a small place in a strip shopping center behind an Exxon station. And if you like craft beer, that Exxon station (Candy's Exxon), believe it or not, has a great selection.

When we were in Carolina Beach we stumbled on this place. The food is great but you have to get there early or there is a long wait.

For a local place on the lake we like the North Harbor Club in Cornelius. You can sit out by the water and watch the boats. When we want a good lunch we go there. Haven't been there for dinner so I can't comment about that.

They don't take reservations but you can call ahead and get put on the waiting list, and that helped us avoid having a really long wait (with five children, one of whom was a five-month-old).

You ever try Silver Hill Grill on 130 between Holden Beach and Shallotte? looks like a really dive but darn good seafood

I will have to give it a try. We have several very good BBQ places here on Oak Island and in Southport. I had some ribs tonight with fried corn on the cobb and fried okra.

Went to Provision Co. in Southport again last night. I would be in trouble if I lived here year round. Half a pound of shrimp, crab cake, grilled tuna sandwich, and another slab of tuna that my wife could not eat. Thought I was going to need a pier cart to get me out of the place.

Now that looks dang good!

Southport Smokehouse is fantastic!

Not really a restaurant, but we found a local dish up in lead. Took the kids to a mining museum, and the your guide was talking about these things called pastys that the miners used to eat. They're kinda like homemade hotpockets.

Anyhow, she told us to grab some from the local gas station, as those are made by the lady that used to run the grocery store in town.

We got some with meat, taters, and onions, pretty dang good.

For a greasy burger all the way (mustard, chilli, slaw, and onions) "Dixie Express" or "Henry James bbq" in Asheboro is real good same places for hot dogs. For pizza and subs "Georges Carry Out".
For a beer and pizza "The Flying Pig is outstanding. They also have a really good spinach and artichoke dip. There is a place in Asheboro that I can't think of the name of it, but I'd argue its one of the best restaurants in the state. Positanos is the name. For southern or soul food "The Dipper", the deserts are homemade, plus my momma works there. For Mexican I like "Burrito Brothers". These are all in Asheboro. Biscuit company for breakfast they also have a good burger. TJs has a good biscuit. I don't know if TJs is still around I heard the owner died.

I love the flying pig. They have a calzone that's basically a large pizza folded in half. I got one last time I was there. Brought most of it home with me. Took me 3 days to eat it. Need to get back down there for dinner one Saturday night

Back when I was single and nothing better for someone to spend my money on. I'd drop a ton of money there. I love it. The atmosphere is outstanding. For a good time and good food that is the best place in town. It gets packed quick and it dont let up. If you want a spot at the bar get there early.

There's also Luckys in the Walmart shopping center. Pretty good cheeseburgers and wings. And live music most nights.

Where do you live? Im right outside of Asheboro. Meet and greet in Asheboro? At the pig? No fighting? No jail?

I'm in southeast Guilford County about 2 miles north of the Randolph county line. lol meeting at the Pig one night would be awesome. No fighting, at least not from me, and I'm not going to jail so there's that.

I'm going to post 2. One, Kaye's, is in Newland and they have the best breakfast anywhere! Omelettes, all you can eat with anything you can think of inside, made right in front of you, cooked on both sides and no just on one and flipped over, bacon, ham, sausage, potato casserole, fruit, pancakes, French toast, good coffee, $10!

The other is Stonewall's in Banner Elk. I had the Halibut and twice bakes loaded potato. Mmmmmm good!!! Go there if you're in the area seeing the leaves change or skiing. Super place!

YES to both!!!

I like Eloise's right on hwy 421 in between Siler City and Goldston. Also tickle my ribs in Burlington has good bbq. Mimi's in Burlington has some great pizza and wings, it's carry out or delivery only. For sushi I like a place in myrtle Beach called art.

Jd's smoke House, exit 103 in Burke county NC,not only some good smokey flavored barbacue, but the sides are excellent as well, it only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and if you go at peak times be prepared to wait in line.
My favorite bbq in the area. Large portions, great mustard-based sauce, and fantastic homestyle sides. Plus, you can get bones for your mutt 3/$1.

Hey y'all.

We're still in the process of moving to coastal NC (Morehead City). Can someone recommend a place for 'regular' barbecue? You know, brisket, RIBS, smoked turkey and the like, served dry or with St. Louis, Memphis, or the usual sauces seen outside the Carolinas?

I am not a fan of vinegar on or in anything. So the prospect of all my future "barbecue" adventures being a pile of pulled pork soaked in vinegar sauce is appalling.

Any good places in Carteret County or the surroundings? I think I saw a "Texas barbecue" place on Rt. 70 in Havelock. Any good?

Houston, we have a problem. ;)

You'll have to figure out that our barbecue is 'regular' barbecue before you can go any further. I don't know the coastal scene, but I know around Lexington, anybody who dared call their place a bbq restaurant that served grilled meat instead of real barbecue wouldn't be open long.

And by the way, Eastern style (which is what you'll find where you are) is the vinegar-heavy bbq. Lexington style is the kind that God intended for man to eat.

OK it seems I'll need to change my definition of "regular." lol

Can anyone recommend an irregular place?

I'm not asking for grilled meats. Dry rubbed, slow smoked food is great. I just happen to disagree that pouring vinegar on otherwise perfectly good food is a good thing. YMMV. Don't be hatin'.

What's "Lexington style?" Is that the mustard-based sauces?

No, that's the weird SC style. Lexington style is tomato based (but it does have vinegar in it).

Just giving you a hard time about 'grilled meats'. To explain how rare what you're asking for is though, we took some teens from our church to St Louis this summer and were taken to a bbq restaurant out there. None of them understood how bbq was anything other than pork shoulder.

Like I said, I'm not sure about the coast, but in Winston I could think of maybe one or two places that might be close to what you're looking for.

DO. NOT. MOVE to Morehead City with that attitude!!!
YOU. MUST. MOVE to the western part of NC (at least as far west as Lexington) to get what you are asking for (sorta).
North Carolina has a divided loyalty on Barbeque (it's never BBQ except to the uninitiated infidels) and this "war" has been going on for over a hundred years. EAST of Lexington the REAL Barbeque is a vinegar-based sauce that is applied as the PIG is slow cooked over hardwood coals for hours. From Lexington to the West they slab on some tomato-based stuff and call it BBQ. The mustard-based whatever it is is found in SOUTH Carolina.

BTW- Welcome to NC and CFF.

Edit to add: I think we had a LONG discussion a couple of years back on NCGO about this - without any resolution as to which was best.

OK, so what do you guys do if you travel to Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, or Texas?

I'd be in heaven at "Memphis in May." Slow cooked ribs served dry with sauce on the side, or with just a thin layer applied at the very end of a (long) cooking cycle.

If I'm in Texas, I eat brisket! I try to avoid Memphis. KC, I eat the ribs.

I'm an odd ball here because I can eat and enjoy both "Down East" and "Lexington" style barbecue.

There doesn't appear to be a City Barbecue anywhere closer to you than Garner, but that's your best bet for Texas style cue.
