FCC Cites Baofeng Importer for Illegally Marketing Unauthorized RF Devices

What's the difference between these 2 radios? Other than 2 pvs 5 pack and a programming cable.

and

From what I read: The 5R only has two power settings (low/high) and the 5Rtp has three settings (low/med/high); also appears the 5Rtp set includes hand mikes. Believe the 5R package is a better deal.

What accessories do you recommend for these?
In addition to a programming cable, I also have hand mikes, AA battery case shells, and a car charging adapter. You also may want to upgrade the antenna.

So come next month it's illegal to sell your radio if it falls under this?

You will be able the "gift" them to others and I am sure there would likely be a "fee" associated with that, but offering for sale, commercially or privately appears to about to become illegal.

"The same implementation schedule outlined above for devices with voice obscuring features is used for these changes to FRS. That is, 90 days after the effective date of new sections 95.561(c) and 95.1761(c) adopted in the part 95 R&O, no equipment authorization will be granted for any transmitter type under FRS and any other service, other than part 15. Second, two years after the effective date of new sections 95.587(e), 95.591, 95.1791(a) and (b) adopted in the part 95 R&O, no person shall be permitted to manufacture or import, sell or offer for sale any radio equipment capable of operating under both subpart B (FRS) and any other service, other than part 15. The Commission grandfathered the operation of any existing combination radios as set forth above, and reminded operators of such existing devices that fit within the reclassified GMRS category that they must obtain a license before operating a GMRS device."

Note the effective date of the new sections was 28 SEP 2017...so two years from that date this goes into effect.

That's BS. Where do they figure they have the right to tell me I can't sell my personal property? Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit...

And do you have any idea how much bringing a lawsuit, to federal court no less which is worse, would cost you? You could by a very nice ham radio station for a fraction of the amount.

That's where something like ACLU or something like that should help... Too busy trying to save scumbags though...

..and remember, once again these are bureaucrats making "law" (regulatory guidance)...not Congress or other elected official body...bureaucrats.

Bought 6 Wouxun KG-UVD1P handhelds several years ago. I'm trying to compare them to the 5R radios. I looks like they can do the same thing but my electronics-foo ain't worth a hoot. Any advise?

got mine today...charging now.
most likely, i'll be asking for advice
soon enough.

Any info on this amazon review claiming they're copies?

Disclaimer, I'm a newbie to comms so I'm doing a ton of research.

Got this unit because the price was good and interested in the stated 8w power. But when I opened the package, I read the manual and it stated the batteries should come completely discharged. They were fully charged.

So doing further research, this model is not produced by Baofeng. There is no UV-5RTP. For Baofeng if you want 8w, the BF-F8HP is their model. Think this is a unit taken by a third party, upgraded (quality of upgrade being suspect) and sold under the Baofeng banner. That didn't sit well with me, I returned the item and am buying a BF-F8HP. Labelling on Amazon was deceptive and the price was too good. I'd call this item a counterfeit.

a copy of a chinese chicom radio? Maybe made in Hong Kong or Taiwan with better parts? :D

That's rich.

OK how many of y'all have turned em all in Mr and Mrs America?

I actually find talk of fake and illegal Bofungus radios comical, but I guess it's a real thing. If you decide to buy the 8 watt to drain the battery quicker, beware of this issue and how to identify the genuine CCP HT. ;) https://baofengtech.com/blog/Fr/Post/17/BF-F8HP

Really, they’re good for what they are. You can put one in a bag, you can keep it in your car (and if you’re unlucky someone will break in and leave you two more). You can give one to a teenager. If it breaks, oh well. However, you won’t get anywhere near the receive sensitivity or the transmit range of a good (e.g. yae-comm-wood) HT even.

A few years ago you recommended an FT-6H I think it was. I finally put up an HF antenna in the back yard, an 80m OCF dipole. I adapted the LMR400 into the SMA connector and tuned around on 40m AM and SSB and picked up both an English version of a Chinese talk show, China today, and a (western) Chinese RAP station. Standing there in my back yard with a handheld radio.

The shortwave receiver in the TH-F6A and the D74 are both very good. I carry the TH-F6A in my car because it's tri-band.

I have one older Bofungus BF-F8 I loan to people I don't care about. So, if I ever loan anyone one here a Bofungus HT, you know where you stand with me. ;)

Believe it or not, but another thing I found that little radio to be good for is an FM broadcast receiver for when you just want a little background music in your work shop or area. Even with the little speaker in the HT it puts out sound that is remarkably high quality and certainly good enough for that usage.

This will rank up there with J-walking and spitting on the sidewalk. Precisely nobody with normal depth pockets will ever be cited.

Given that 99% of the buyers use them for casual chats into a repeater , they're a fine value.
