Looking to get my first AK in 30+ years...the last one I bought was in 1986, a Chinese one from Roses in Fayetteville...

Anyways, this is the one I am looking at, made by WBP Poland and imported by Atlantic Firearms.

Do any of you AK savvy folks know anything firsthand about this company and its products? I have read the internet stuff, but looking for personal opinions here.

Barring significantly negativity here, and if I can sell that Colt A4 I have listed, I will be getting one of these...

Welcome back to the club

Full disclosure - I do not have a WBP in my AK stable. That said, I've followed them since they went on the market, and have read countless reviews and watched Rob Ski and others discuss them in videos. In my opinion they are good to go and won't let you down. I'd love to have one myself for no other reason than to have a Polish AK, but not at that price. For a classic AKM style rifle with wood furniture, I'd go for (yet) another WASR myself, and parlay the leftover cash into mags and ammo - especially if it was my first AK.

You are just (re)starting out in the AK game - mags and ammo are going to be more important than the gun itself, and although surplus mags are getting pricier and a bit harder to find, 7.62x39 ammo is dirt cheap right now. For how long, who knows, but we all know it won't last forever and everyone with at least one AK should be stacking as much ammo as they can afford.

Edited to add ... if you are gung-ho on a Polish AK, stay away from Pioneer Arms. @Ikarus1 is correct about genuine Radom parts for the WBP rifles, but Pioneer Arms and outlets like Classic Firearms use dubious lingo to connect their junk wares with the famed military company. Pioneer Arms AKs are not made by FB Radom, but rather in the town of Radom. They should be avoided like plague flavored pierogis.

Thanks for the quick replies...I had looked at some WASR's at Jims here in Fayetteville a couple of weeks ago, but went in there the other day and they didn't have a single AK in the rack...they used to be laying around like unwanted black jellybeans, but now I don't see them as often.

I don't have a WBP but I the reviews I've seen saybthey are GTG. You will not find a better rifle than the WASR for the money or even 100's more.

yeah you will if you buy one of your MAK90s you have been liquidating lately. I would take a MAK90 over a new WASR any day.........but oh well. I have a feel these things will eventually be imported by black market pirates when we are
all under various serfdoms after the balkanization happens.

The correct answer is always....

You've picked the worst time to buy an AK.
If you wait and watch, you might snag one for less. It's a shame that what should be a $5oo rifle is going for more like 7 right now.

Couple weeks back I saw them come up for sale at $620, but they went out of stock quick.

Brownells is $679 on backorder
If you use one of their various weekly discount codes for a percentage off a certain amount, you can probably knock this down $20-$40.

Surf the pawn shops too. They turn up, just not as much anymore.

Either way, take into account that you'll need to trash the furniture right away. It's made out of Balsa wood.

That's "fair" in today's market, but it's still a bit high in my book. Add any shipping & handling charges, possible taxes, and then your transfer fee, and you can jump up another $50 or so pretty easily. The Brownells deal isn't too bad if you don't mind waiting on the backorder to fill. Also, if you have an Active Junky account you can get another 6% back (+/- $40 right now) on the purchase. So, combine that with a Brownells promo code and you're looking at closer to $600. You just have to wait, and then pay for the transfer.

You're in Fayetteville. I see stuff pop up all the time down there on Armslist. If you can wade through all the garbage on that site, you might not have to look too long or far. Also, keep an eye out in the classifieds here and check your local pawn shops. WASRs aren't exactly falling off trees anymore, but it's not out of the ordinary to still find decent deals on them.

I don't really consider a Mak90 anymore as readily available.

Hell yes...I sold it, myHK91 andHK93 when I was getting married in 89...if I could only have seen what was coming

The WBP rifles are good to go. Wasr’s are fine but they tend to be a little rough around the edges. I’ve been spoiled by Arsenals and Saigas.

Atlantic currently has the SLR107CRs if you’re looking for something to make into an SBR. You can always leave the barrel long and use a dummy flash hider too. They are nearly $1200, but it’s top notch. I wish they were importing the FR version still, I’d scrounge some pennies for one.

I sold my Arsenals so I don’t have a dog in this fight. But mine did not have those issues, alls I’m saying. I think when you spend over $1000 it’s easier to find problems. I wish other companies would make an AK-100 pattern instead of just AKMs. Maybe I’m alone there but I love the AK-100 series.

I have a very clean Saiga that I am planning to convert to a 103, that's why I am getting bike parts from Russia.

I’m also in Fayetteville, and remember the Roses guns well. Bought a couple SKS’s and an AK there back in the day. I recently bought a WASR at the Fayetteville gun show, but it was used. Did see a few at dealers tables in the $600 range, so the gun show may be an option for you. I believe there’s a show the first weekend in April.

Ok...picked up a used WASR 10/63 with 4 mags, scope mount, leather sling and a rusty ass old bayonet for 500.
Needs a good cleaning, will post again after I give it some attention next week.
