I'm wanting to buy a can for my 8.5" barreled 300 blackout pistol. I've read reviews and looked at manufacturers and searched for issues and long term tests etc... The choices are overwhelming almost with no past experiance. What's going to be a good can for my application?

Lots of choices. There are some pistol cans that are rated for .300 Blackout subsonic only that would be lightweight and compact. Or you can get a 30 caliber rifle can that you can use with subs and supers, and that you can use with more powerful 30 caliber rifles and on a 5.56.

I chose the Rugged Suppressors (made in SC) Surge 762 for maximum versatility. Rugged later introduced a shorter Razor and later a Micro 30 (the latter is modular like the Surge).

I’ve watched a lot of video reviews. I find Twang n Bang’s to be very informative.

My short list would probably be, in no particular order:

1. Dead Air Sandman S or Nomad
2. Energetic Arms Vox
3. Silencerco Omega (or maybe Chimera)
4. YHM Resonator
5. Rugged Razor

There's another half dozen or more if you wanted a long list, but that's where I'd start.

I think the YHM QD system is the best choice. Dead Air KeyMo right behind it. Both of those are available for some silencers beyond just the YHM/DA offerings.

@TARHEELSTATE ought to be able to help you out if you're looking for a dealer

To add to what @Crunchy Frog posted while I was typing, there are also a couple pistol cans rated for subs and supers in 300BLK. I personally wouldn't start out with one that was subs only unless you were going to dedicate that host/can to a suppressed combo using subsonic ammo.

I haven’t looked at 30 cal rifle cans in a long time, but as I recall from back then most cans were not rated for full-power rounds from a barrel shorter than 10” or so. Point is, if you’re going to be restricted to subsonic rounds anyway the pistol cans might make a lot of sense.

Hope one of you experts will correct me!

That has definitely changed. There are a couple (of the major) manufacturers with zero barrel restrictions on their products.

And a handful of others that rate them down to 7.5" for 5.56. But even the ones that stop at 10" usually say 7"-8" for 300BLK. I think I even have one (YHM Nitro that's limited to 16" with a flash hider but 10" with a muzzle brake)

Some examples:

Dead Air Nomad (Sandman is also FA rated with no restrictions):

First suppressor ... well it is not the best at one thing but it does a lot of things pretty good ... I have a Griffin Armament Optimus that gets moved around from rimfire to handguns to centerfires (and yes that Marlin shot suppressed very nicely!). On .300BO it will handle subs and supers but I’ve only run supers just to compare just how dirty subs vs supers was but it did very nicely on both ... subs suppressed was very good. Being your first I’ll throw the Optimus in the mix ... after you get your first suppressor you’ll start the collection with more specific ones for specific jobs.

Love the new screen name @Burt Gum :D

I’m a fan of Griffin Armament suppressors. Quality cans and a veteran owned company. I use them on precision rifles, hunting, and run of the mill AR15 applications

They have a wide variety of options to fit your particular needs as well

Although YHMs price point is hard to beat

Good info, I’m gonna do some research, might be time to finally buy a rifle can.

Sandman S is probably the one I’d buy from them if I was in the market. Would research the Nomad a little more before I made a decision, but I’d skip the L, the K and the Ti (direct thread).

Thanks, I appreciate the guidance. New to cans and have a lot to learn before I become a stamp collector.

If you have any questions, feel free to post up or shoot me a PM. I still have two forms pending, and the second one of those gets me to 40 stamps...so I’ve been through the process a couple times.

I’m also a mod in several of the NFA sections on AR15.com. I only mention that to say I don’t know everything about the NFA, but I’ve seen almost every question asked in multiple different ways. :D

Will do, I really appreciate the kind offer. Thank you.

Some examples:
I like the TBAC Ultra on my 10" 300BLK & on 30cal and smaller dia longer range guns as well.
You, being a SuperMod and all probably already know this, if you have a windows computer you might have the snip tool that makes grabbing pictures easy. Then you can rt. click and paste them into the post.

I used Snag-It to do my big EForms how-to. Then my license (work laptop) expired and I found the Snip-It on my work laptop. I just got a new one (Windows 10?) and haven’t looked to see if it’s on that one.

If you’re mentioning it because of the quality of pic, it’s only because I browse 99% of the time on my phone...so it was easier to just take a pic of my screen for the little info needed. :D
