Haven’t had much time to spend on the water this season and finally got a chance to spend the morning at the pond with my Dad and brother in law.

I took one Canada Goose and a Hooded Merganser with my Mossberg 535. BIL took a Canada Goose as well, Dad struck out this trip.

Hardly any ducks flying around us this morning and the few that did fly didn’t want anything to do with our calls and decoys. Looking forward to one more trip next weekend before the season goes out.

P.S, picked up a new condor knife from @thrillhill last night (can’t remember the model, maybe Bill can chime in) and it made quick work of cleaning the birds today.

Eat the goose, release the Merganser...
I’ve heard a lot of people say that but I eat both. Merganser isn’t my favorite, and I honestly thought it was a wood duck coming in early in the morning otherwise I would have let it go, but since I shot it I’ll eat it.

Got a goose last weekend!
Sad that I have hunted maybe 3 times this season even though I now have weekends off. Management sucks!

Love shooting geese and have cooked many of them over the years, some damn near unedible. I think at this point is a breast brined in sea salt for a couple days, what ever spice you want and then hit the smoker for about 2.5 hrs. at 350. Leave them rare. Cooked a brisket and a goose breast side by side and when sliced the flavor was almost identical. Here are a few we shot last week on a field hunt in the Northern Neck. Killed a few more geese and ducks out of the blind in the next day or so after, but kept icing up and had to bust ice every morning..geese.jpg
