I've got a 10x SWFA SS that needs sent back to be fixed (I managed to break one).

So after I send it off, it's likely to go on my AR10. My RPR has a Vortex Viper PST.

At times I think running the RPR with the fixed power since it's a bench / prone gun. Neither will be used for hunting, having a 6.5 Grendel AR being built for that, and I am going to go 2.5-10x with.

What are y'all thoughts on one vs the other?

Kudos on managing to break one!

The fixed works well and makes it easy as long as you don't need any additional magnification you'll be well served. I like having the variable (vortex razor - gen 1) on my match rifle because of thise times you need to zoom in to make a shot, or zoom out to find the target.

I don't see me doing any precision matches with the RPR, but the AR10 could be one I use.
I'd probably keep the fixed on the rpr and the pst on the AR.

Getting old sucks when the glasses keep changing every year. Lol

I had a 16x fixed on the first model 10 savage I ever modified. It was a great scope except for:

Low light conditions. Definitely don't want to deer hunt with it.

And super hot barrel/air temp scenarios. Of course the barrel mirage on calm days without a wind meter would give a hint of a slight wind when there didn't appear to be any. I'll be building a Grendel upper this fall and it'll have a variable power vortex on it cause I'm gonna hunt with it

I've got a Grendel inbound for hunting, a 2.5x10x is what I figure for it

I have a 10x SWFA that I have on a 6.5 CM Vanguard that I hunt with as well as ding steel. I've never had a problem killing deer right up to legal time on a 200 yard shooting lane in the woods or out in the fields.

As far as variables I have a Vortex PST 6-24 on a 338 LM that I can't wait to knock a deer down with! :D

My main concern is the reticle fading out at dark thirty. So far it hasn't been a problem with the SWFA fixed scopes. I have illuminated reticles on several other scopes but I always considered them more of a gimmick than anything else. Or maybe something to get you a big fat ticket for shooting at that deer 10 minutes after legal. I tried them one night coyote hunting and they worked fine against the dark background. Still couldn't see anything though until I turned on the light, at which time a regular reticle would have worked just as well.
