The cost was a little more - $80 for all materials to do 2 shelves. But it went together much easier.

1x12 common board for the top and bottom
1x5 common board for the sides
1x2 for the compartment edges inside.
Rev a loc magnetic locks

Overall they turned out real nice. Gives 3” depth on the inside for storage. The stain brought out some cool grains.

Kreg pocket holes for everything made this go together so easily.
 
A friend and I built some nearly identical shelves about 6-8mo who and I still haven’t mounted mine as I fee it stands out too much.

I’ve been toying with the idea of using crown molding as the front and side faces as I think the tapered look will fit better in my house.

We used those friction hinges recommended on Rogue Engineer and those things are a bit of a PITA to get mounted just right. They do work well though.
