Flying with firearm

Last 4 or 5 times I've checked it, and the check person said hang out for 20 minutes or so in case...whatever. I guess if someone wants me to open it.

That never happened and off we went.

I would allow a little more time but it's really no big deal.

Ok, update for you folks if interested.
Out of CLT I checked in at the self kiosk and the needed me to be checked in by an attendant. They asked to see the box but not open it and made me sign a slip and stick it to the box. They also require a RED bag tag with my cell. They did ask that I hang out for 15 minutes in case TSA called up with questions.
Picked up in St Louis where the baby seats and odd luggage come out with an ID check.

Flew out of SGF Springfield MO, same deal checking there. No big deal. Pick up at CLT from the mail freight area. No real hassles, maybe just 20 extra minutes to check in and pickup up each time. No escorts, no dirty looks

Glad everything went well. Thanks for the update on your experience. I hope these post will encourage others to travel with their firearm so they can carry at their destination.

Raleigh was the worst the last time I flew with a rifle case. I had to give the case to a baggage handler away from the check in point who demanded the keys to the case. I refused so after much discussion she took the case and came back in about 5 minutes with a TSA guy who said that if I didn't turn over the keys to him the rifle wasn't going any further. I offered to open it and show him it wasn't loaded but he wasn't having any of that. Keys or no checking. I gave in, handed over the keys, he disappeared with the handler down an elevator and then the handler came back with the keys. I really expected to have an empty case when I got to the other end but everything was in place. The handler smirked through the whole ordeal. That was about 5 years ago, maybe it's changed since then.

Once when I flew out of Pittsburgh I was checking an M1 rifle in a case. The ticket agent was being very disapproving of a firearm to begin with and demanded that I show that the rifle was not loaded. Right here? I asked. Yes. So I pulled the rifle out and racked back the action. The terminal seemed to go silent. She told me to quickly put it away. I locked it up and she took it with a look of 'you filthy animal' on her face. When I would fly out of Burbank CA with firearms it was never a hassle.
