Any experience in this motor in the ford HD platform? Specifically in the early 2000s?

Reliable, but change your intake gaskets every few years even if they look fine. They like to leak coolant into #1 and #6 intake ports and hydro lock the motors and bend the rods.

We had one at the fire department in an Excusion. It had good power, ran smooth but had terrible gas mileage of about 10 mpg or so tops.

I have a ‘00 Excursion with the V10. Almost 300,000 on the clock. Change the oil every 5,000 religiously with synthetic. Keep an extra few coils and plugs on hand, along with an EGR valve and vacuum line. A good OBD computer is a HUGE plus….

I love it!! She don’t like cheap gas, but I didn’t buy it for fuel economy.

If I nurse it gently, I can get 12-14 mpg out of it.

I rarely nurse it gently. [emoji4]

Traded in my 2003 Excursion a couple years ago with 277k on the clock. Motor still ran like a top with no real work ever. Like 1911 - keep up on the oil changes (I did regular every 3k cause it was cheap and easy). I did have a coil go bad every few years, probably ended up replacing half of the originals by the end. Was similarly aggressive with other maintenance intervals, and it never let me down.

Drank fuel like it was water - 9 was normal, 11 if I was trying. That engine needed the 44 gallon tank to have any range.

Loved that truck and motor. I really had no need to keep a second big truck, but I should have kept it around just because they aren’t making them like that anymore.

We also have one in the brush truck at the department - though similar vintage it has nearly no miles, but they are all hard miles carrying real weight and it has been similarly reliable. Only issues with that truck have been electrical and not related to anything from Ford.

Mine wouldn't get that good on a Roll Back.
Make sure the plugs are tight, but he v-8 and v-10’s was bad for plugs working loose and blowing out!
The plug on the driver's side against the firewall Will break without the right tool to remove [ax me how's I know?].

I imagine not…the bed and hydraulic gear probably weighed more than an excursion body…[emoji15]

Any suggestions for the OBD computer/reader? Preferably one compatible with an iOS device.

Update, I bought it. 2004 Excursion Limited 4x4 with a hair under 170k on it. Needs a few minor things done to it, but seems to be a solid, well taken care of vehicle. Has an almost brand new set of Michelin LTXs on it (265/75/16) which is great but kinda sucks cause it’s hard to justify going up a size or two when these tires will probably last me 5/7 years lol.

I like it, wasn’t a huge fan of the color (pewter/gold) to start with, but it’s growing on me lol.

It does hurt your feelings to pull up to the gas pump, filled up about 20 miles from home after picking it up, with a little under 1/4 of a tank and filling it up with 87 was $112 lol

Pics or it didn't happen, as they say.

My 36' Rv with 22 tires V10 3 VALVE gets a whooping 6.2 mpg no matter what I pull or don't. Gross weight 26001 rated across scales without tow dolly and car full fuel 20 gallons of water etc 19800 or so.
27800 miles so far. Computer cuts the fuel off at 83 mph which sucks if you're hitting a 6-8 mile grade.

This is a 2 valve (they never put the 3v in the Excursions :( )

On the interstate cruise set at 75ish it gets 14-15, my “daily” drive 14 miles with a few slow downs/stops but mainly 55mph rural 2 lanes, I’ve been getting a little over 12.5, in town it’s single digits lol.

The black Ram is my best friends, I bought it from a guy near him, the Ram is a 94 2500 Cummins single cab long bed that he has completely restored, to better than showroom condition.

Love it, that’s one reason we bought this Ex, 4 boys that are all gonna be big are already outgrowing the minivan on trips, and want the option to pull a boat or camper at some point in the future. I typically drive about 8k a year, so the gas mileage isn’t a big deal

We spent 6 months last trip out on the road towing our car for excursions. Stayed on BLM land Trust Lands Casinos Truck Stops City Parks you name it we probably stayed there if it was free.. In 6 months we spent less than 400 bucks in campgrounds and 10 days of that was in Vegas plugged in to AC.
We had a blast. Had Verizon MIFI for internet on a unlimited an that was/ still is Granfathered in. We did the Western Bike Rally in Laughlin Nv. We had won a room for 5 days at the casino with good drinks shows etc while the rally was on.
We had free parking for the Rv there too.
We ended up traversing 8K miles in that trip including the car excursions.

That seems to be a LOT of tires for one RV.

I missed the .5
255-70R- 22.5 tires to be exact.
6 on Rv.
So dolly and 2 car tires on ground 10 tires wearing.

Well, dropped the psi in the front tires from 68 to 40, still no give in the sidewall and no noticeable flex or roll when driving, and it doesn’t shake your fillings out every time you run over a leaf in the road, gonna do the same to the rears tonight.

Fixed the license plate (left side of it wasn’t holding the screw in) by going up a size on the screws.

Windshield replacing Monday, hopefully tint towards the end of the week on the front driver and pass windows and windshield.

Leaking exhaust manifold, tempted to do headers when instead of just fixing that.

With gas prices the way they are I’m leaning towards taking it to 5 Star over in Florence and getting a tuner for it (their base package you get the tuner and 5 custom tunes, plus the basic “canned” tunes the tuner comes with, for your truck for about $450 I think) cause I’m seeing reports of 2-3 mpg increase with their tunes.

The only other “major” imo things I want to do is something about the seats (actual seating surface on the two front seats is extremely worn, with a small tear on the drivers side) can’t find OEM replacement covers for it anymore. And the interior panel on the back “barn door” on the passenger side doesn’t want to stay on, the holes where the plastic pegs are supposed to fasten are wallowed out, probably from the freaking vibration of the ride with fully aired up E rated tires for the past 170k miles lol.

There’s a guy in NC on a Excursion forum I’m on that’s got a 01 I think with the 6.8 and has a TT setup on it…800ish hp and over 1k tq to the wheels on his shops dyno, running like 6lb of boost, love to do something like that but just guessing, I’d probably have as much in building the motor to handle it reliably and the twin turbo setup as I do currently in the whole truck lol!
