Hey folks, I recently moved to Charlotte, NC from Maryland for a new job. Happy to be in a more gun-friendly state, although surprise NC is less gun-friendly than VA, given it is pretty much a red state. I work in the tech field and a firearms enthusiast and strongly believe in the 2A. One thing I absolutely hated about Maryland was the lack of concealed carry rights.

Currently I'm focused on getting my NC driver's license and taking the NC CHP course. I'm surprised some CHP courses require you have a NC driver's license and even for the pistol permit, it's as if buying a handgun here is tied to having a NC driver's license.

Looking forward to chatting with you all and learning more about NC gun laws and politics.

I lived in Capitol heights Maryland for a couple years. Terrible place. How are va gun laws better than NC? Just curious.

The whole need for a pistol permit to purchase a handgun or NC CHP (which requires fingerprinting unlike VA). In VA you don't need any of that (they check DL and NICS), no fingerprints, and they will accept other training certificates (NC only accepts NC training cert), handguns are treated the same as rifles in terms of purchasing them. I am just surprised that in a state as red as North Carolina is that you have these bs impediments and requirements. Don't get me wrong, coming from Maryland this is still much better.

I have visited the NC DMV twice here in Charlotte to apply for a NC driver's license and was met with terribly long lines each time so I left. Just getting a DL here is difficult. Also many of the NC CHP courses want you to have a NC DL before taking the class.

Anyways looks like my fastest path to buying a new handgun is a pistol permit from the Sherrif's office, but even that requires a separate trip! I just think there are too many bs hurdles here in NC for handgun ownership. Thank god, I already have a few pieces for safety.

As for Capitol Heights, I use to live in College Park so I'm quite familiar with CH, quite a rough area but proximity to DC is very nice!

Also thank you all for the kind welcome.

I wasn't finger printed here for a ppp. That's news to me. I agree and believe all gun laws are to stiff. I dont believe violent felons should have a right to guns but the rest is crap. I carried my gun when I was in DC and Maryland. I've seen multiple people shot up there and I intended to defend myself. We had several guys robbed in MD on jobsites.

Yeah no fingerprints needed for a Pistol Permit (I edited to my previous post for wrongfully saying that), but for a NC CHP it is required and damn its unfortunate MD makes it so difficult for law-abiding people to get a concealed carry permit, at least DC is now shall-issue.

Shall issue. They have serious issues lol. I'm glad to be back home in the land of the more so free than there.

Welcome and you left some of the best flounder fishing areas that I've ever floated!

An hour north of Charlotte is a little town called Taylorsville. It’s DL office is just outside of town in the boonies. Usually empty. You could have your DL done in the time it would take to stand in line. Jus sayin....

Welcome! I served an eighteen year sentence in Maryland decades ago as a government contractor. Nothing made me happier than returning to the Old North State! Relax, and enjoy the liberty while it lasts.

What's the North Carolina equivalent of crab cakes? I know the BBQ here is something people rave about...

Yeah, I’d say bbq, here, is the equivalent. I grew up in Silver Spring, so not too far from where you were. My favorite crab cake place was Gunnings, until they closed. Now, I really dig The Corner Stable when I go to visit family.
