I need to replace my Apple Watch and am considering the Garmin.

I'm fairly tightly bound to the Apple ecosystem, but I can live without texts and phone calls on my wrist. My primary usage is the GPS and health apps (heart, O2, etc.). And, if I'm being honest, I like the style of the Garmin better. Music is only vaguely a minor issue, if at all.

Have any of you made the switch, or gone from Garmin to Apple?

I have researched the Garmin and feel it is a much better fitness/health watch. I to do not need or attached to the text/phone features, more fitness for me. I have been a Samsung watch/phone fan. My Samsung watch had a few hiccups, though Samsung gave me a new replacement. Going forward, I plan to switch to Garmin products. Probably start with the Instinct series and see if I like it. Many of my running friends truly like the Garmin much better. The style is better with the Garmin product too. That may be an issue for the Asheville area though. šŸ™„

Garmin ALL THE WAY.
If you can swing the 6X, that is the most rugid in the 6 line.
Battery life is 7 to 10 days vs a couple days with any Apple jewelry.
Plus Garmin is tough enough to withstand rough activities.
I've had my 5x for more than 3 years now. Love. No apple product would have survived what I put it through. sapphire glass is still unscratched.
I have smacked on the ceramic tile walls of a pool. I have worn while doing a full brake job on a truck, including replacing rotors.
And you are not anchored to an apple phone of computer.

Apple is an OS in a watch in which communications is able to occur, and fitness functions are add-ons. Garmin is fitness/sports-forward, designed for that reason. Garmin. Gar-min. Garrrrrrmin.

Also, look at Suunto.

that's the one in my cart at the moment
You'll love it. Great for hiking too. Displays the trail maps. Also has topo mapping.
Great for swimming as well. Garmin has always been a leader in swim watches.
I get a nice employee discount on Garmin. But I have to wait until I kill my 5X to get a new one.

So, Iā€™m on day 3 with this thing and amā€¦.underwhelmed.

Aside from looking better and voodoo magic battery life, Iā€™m not feeling it.

Do I just need more time to figure it out? Why canā€™t I start an ā€œActivityā€ such as a Hike, and put that in the background while opening some other app, I.e compass or calendar orā€¦.

I really wish the Apple Watch didnā€™t look like it ought to be paired with skinny jeans and $500 flannel shirt.

I looked at the Garmin until I got to the price. Ouch. Apple watch 6 was on sale so the wife and kids got me one for Father's day/Bday. No serious difference from the 5 I had functionally. But I destroyed that 5 at work and the touch screen stopped working and any time my cell lost service the watch just blanked out. So having a functional watch again is a big plus.
