A woman in Iowa died during a gender reveal announcement on Saturday after flying debris from an explosion from what amounted to a homemade pipe bomb struck her, the authorities said on Monday.

The woman, Pamela Kreimeyer, 56, died instantly after she was struck in the head by a piece of metal from a device that was intended to reveal the sex of the baby, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Monday.

Guests gather at gender reveal parties to watch expectant parents announce the sex of their baby. The announcements have become more elaborate, with some involving plumes of smoke, pops of confetti or explosive effects to the shades of blue and pink.

On Saturday afternoon, members of the Kreimeyer family and the expectant mother were at a home in Knoxville, Iowa, about 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.

Some deep dark corner of the internet has video of this.

Shame it was a innocent that caught it.
(I'm guessing) dad was responsible for this? Too bad he didn't take the hit... The only that would have been even better is if Dad got wacked before donating his seed.
Stupid games, stupid prizes.

A phone call used to suffice to tell someone what the baby was. There is absolutely no need in the gender reveal mess.

Oh come on we are a look at me on the interwebz culture now. Gotta put everything out in public as loudly as possible.

Damn sure seems that way to me. If anybody wants to catch me doing goofy crap they'll have to look on here. Only place I go.

If the plume was pink, they should name the baby after the deceased.

Or not.

Jennie had one. Barbi had one. Sherry had one. It’s now a must for girls. It’s another look at me moment.

Can’t blame folks for trying to do something interesting and engaging, it’s just a baby shower. We all do the same, just in different ways that seem normal to each of us, for some it’s vinyl, for others it’s bourbon, some customize cars, others post pictures of their wartches, at the end of the day there isn’t a minutes difference and not a one of us can say we haven’t had a “hold my beer” moment that could have been lethal but for the grace of God.

That said, I’ve never been to a gender reveal party. I have been to a baby shower, but just one, and I have two babies...took me one to wise up.

Never wanted to know if it was a boy or girl with four kids. I liked the surprise element. You get your biggest surprise after the birth at age 12 or 13 with girls when the girl drama begins from the daily stuff girls put each other thru. I almost miss it because it’s like living a season of The Real Housewives of .........
