Since there has been a lot of generator discussion lately, I've not seen anything mentioned about a cover to help reduce the noise. Anyone have a cover?

Been meaning to build one, not for noise primarily for storm coverage. Because, it will likely be raining/storming when I need one. More than once, I've just thrown a small sheet of plywood on top. And then curse the next time I do it again in the rain. I have seen some interesting designs for noise abatement though. I hear they can get pretty smoky, so venting is an issue and incorporated in some of the designs. The engine also needs to breathe.

Look for a motorcycle muffler on ebay, they upgrade the bike and sell off the stock mufflers.
You can bolt them on easy with a threaded adapter.

Just bear in mind that generators are mainly air cooled and must have some degree of circulation in order to operate correctly...

^^^ This.

If you build a cover for a generator be sure to take cooling air flow into account.

If quiet is the goal , why not add a better muffler too..

Mufflers seem to get pretty mixed results on YouTube. Results seem to vary from 2db to 10db reduction. Granted, 10db is a huge amount.

Yeah it seems they're trying to wrong mufflers on most videos that I see. Most everyone is trying those generic tractor type mufflers which have never been all that quiet anyway. As suggested previously, motorcycle mufflers would probably do a much better job.

As for covers, there's lots of videos about that as well showing how to make one from those outdoor storage bins. It's cool how they set them up with a fan to manage airflow.

Thanks for suggestions. What I'm thinking about is to build a box with 1 1/2" insulation board to drop over the generator. Would install a fan(s), something on the order of a bathroom/stove exhaust fan with a long vent or a couple smaller vents on the opposite side. The fan would be plugged into the generator. Using insulation board it would be light. Good idea on the muffler, will start looking for one.
